Questions to Ask Antique Dealers

Collecting antiques often requires some knowledge about the appraised value of vintage objects, as well as the authenticity. The age, overall condition, and rarity of a glass table, piece of furniture or antique toy can certainly have an impact on its value. In other words, when you are in an antique store or shop, you should ask the dealer some specific questions in order to learn more. A few of these helpful inquiries are listed below.

  • What antiques and vintage clothing do you offer?
Knowing what products the dealer offers is crucial, so you can determine if the store sells what you want. This can range from jewelry, to artistic pottery, to classic dolls, to grandfather clocks.

  • What was the item appraised at?
It is helpful to learn more about the appraisal value of the glass lamp, teak table, gold ring, or old book set you are interested in. This way you will be less likely to overpay. After all, there are other antique shops and stores you can visit to learn more and compare prices.

  • How rare is the antique or vintage item?
Depending on the gun, map, chair or desk you are interested in, the number produced is often important when determining the value of the object. Obviously, rarer items are worth more money.

  • What does the item cost?
Various pieces of furniture, pottery, mirrors, and collectable dolls will be available at different rates. If you are like most collectors, the sale price is very important. After all, a different dealer or shop may offer the same antique for a lower price.

If you find you have a real eye for antiques, you may consider becoming a dealer. You'll work directly with stores and auction houses to collect high quality and rare pieces for sale. You'll appraise vintage items like furniture, clothing, and jewelry for various shops.

There's no actual education requirement to become and antique dealer. You must understand antiques and market values though, so courses are available through various colleges to help you understand these better. You may also take courses from technical institutes that specialize in this field. Many courses on how-to appraise are available online.

Probably the most important skill you can have as a dealer is the art of customer service. You will need to make and keep contacts with industry professionals as well as entice customers with your abilities. You will need to be on tops of collecting trends (i.e. glass top tables, emerald rings, cuckoo clocks, etc.), what's hot at the moment, and know where to get the piece for a decent price. If maps, toy dolls, and guns are popular at auction, they'll often fetch higher prices for the house that's selling them. If your customer is looking for glass lamp-work, books by Charles Dickens, or 19th century pottery, then you should be able to advise them accordingly. Furniture (i.e. chairs, desks, mirrors, tables, etc.) are almost always popular and you should be able to "schmooze" your way into getting your customer the best deal.
