Frequently Asked Questions About Sushi
The following are some frequently asked questions about sushi:

Are there different kinds of sushi?
True sushi will contain fish or seafood and rice with sweet rice vinegar. Some sushi has the fish or seafood in the center of the rice, and this food item is wrapped with a piece of pressed seaweed. This is known as maki sushi. Fancier maki sushi rolls include vegetables in with the fish or seafood, and they are usually topped with a specialty sauce. Nigiri is just a piece of fish or seafood on top of a rolled vinegar rice ball. You can also get chopped or pressed sushi, though these presentation styles aren’t as common in many American sushi restaurants. For the major fish and seafood lover, sashimi is the way to go. Sashimi is just sliced fish or seafood that is beautifully arranged on a serving dish.

Isn’t sushi raw fish?
While many sushi selections are served raw, most Japanese restaurants offer a variety of cooked – and sometimes even vegetarian – dishes to please every diner. All raw fish or seafood selections will typically be clearly labeled.

How do I eat sushi?
Sushi, as with other Japanese foods, is cut in the kitchen. All you have to do is grab a set of chopsticks and start enjoying it. Soy sauce is an appropriate condiment, as is wasabi – Japanese horseradish. Pickled ginger is typically provided, too, and is meant to cleanse your palate between different sushi rolls.

What can eating sushi do to my health?
All fish and seafood, whether cooked or uncooked, can pose a risk to your health. Contaminants such as mercury are often present in fish and other seafood. For this reason, pregnant women in particular are told to avoid eating fish and seafood. Raw and undercooked food can be a breeding ground for bacteria, especially when handled improperly. As with any restaurant, only visit sushi bars and restaurants that are clean and handle their food in a sanitary manner. Eating sushi does have many potential health benefits, including high levels of protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Many kinds of sushi are low in fat and calories.

Many consider sushi dining to be a healthy and nutritional form of food consumption. Fresh fish such as tuna and salmon contain many valuable vitamins and minerals. In addition, other standard sushi ingredients such as sticky rice and veggies are low in fat and contain high levels of protein. Individuals sensitive to raw fish or spicy food may want to exercise caution before eating fresh sushi.

In addition to restaurant dining, homemade sushi making has also become increasingly widespread. Most homemade sushi recipes contain similar ingredients to dishes found on menus in sushi bars and restaurants. Popular items from tuna sashimi and maki, to roku and crab rolls, yama and nigiri, or edo, ra, and ota have become common household meals across the country. Accompanying items such as nori seaweed, tempura, wasabi and ginger, have become staples of many household kitchens, along with small and grande sake bottles.

States don’t usually require chefs to obtain special licenses to prepare sushi. However, some sushi bars and restaurants require their chefs to have special certifications when handling potentially poisonous seafood. For instance, certain types of shellfish can be dangerous if not prepared properly. Like the rest of the food service industry, they must follow standard food safety laws and permit requirements.

Culinary enthusiasts around the world continue to celebrate sushi as a nutritious and flavorful alternative to fast food and other less healthy dishes. As the interest in worldwide cuisine continues to broaden, sushi restaurants play a key role in exposing consumers to new flavors.
