Tips for Choosing a Personal Trainer
Personal trainers are great fitness resources. If you have a particular area you’d like to target, a trainer has the qualifications and expertise to produce results in the most effective way. Trainers also give you the one-on-one attention that will help to motivate you towards your fitness goals. Because the relationship between trainer and client is such an intimate one, it is important to choose a personal trainer with great care. Here are a few guidelines that will help you to make a knowledgeable decision:

Tip #1: Check your trainer’s credentials.
A serious personal trainer will demonstrate his or her commitment to the field by having a high level of education. An ideal personal trainer will have a degree from an accredited college or university in physical education, sports management, kinesiology, exercise science or exercise physiology. There are also acceptable certificate programs available at the community college level. These certification programs do not require general education courses but offer comprehensive training in weight training techniques, fitness assessment and injury prevention. Some of the main organizing bodies for personal trainer certification are the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the National Exercise and Strength Trainers Association (NESTA) and the National Federation of Professional Trainers (NFPT). Your personal trainer should also have a Registered Dietician credential from the American Dietetic Association.

Tip #2: Check references and get referrals.
When interviewing personal trainers, don’t be afraid to ask for a client list you can contact for a reference. If you have a friend or relative who has succeeded in reaching his or her fitness goals with a personal trainer, then ask about that trainer’s techniques, personality, professionalism, qualifications, etc.

Tip #3: Avoid the salesperson.
A personal trainer who is a Registered Dietician is qualified to give you nutritional advice and make product recommendations, but no personal trainer should ever attempt to sell you nutritional supplements. This means that the trainer is working on commission from another company, which is an unethical conflict of interests.

Many gyms employ personal trainers, who are certified to help everyone from athletes to seniors improve their health, using weight management diets and effective exercises. Many clubs hire dieticians who help people choose menu plans that will encourage them to reach their weight loss and fitness goals. When fitness and nutrition trainers work together with the same person, the student often learns more about the best ways to take care of his or her body with healthy choices.
