Frequently Asked Questions About Diving Instruction
Diving instruction provides information to those interested in becoming certified in SCUBA (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) using oxygen tanks and wet suits to explore reefs and other areas under water. To become a professional diver, one must be PADI, Professional Association of Diving Instructors, certified. Here are some frequently asked questions you may come up against in your search for quality diving instruction courses:

What is involved in a diving instruction class?
Most diving courses involve both a classroom portion and a swim portion. You must pass both sets of tests, both in the field with a series of skills tests, and a written test portion that you must complete and pass. Depending on the level of instruction, you may learn diving techniques, diving signals, how to breathe, how to save yourself and others, and various water survival skills. You’ll also be taught the proper ascent and descent techniques, free-diving and open circuit scuba.

How soon can I get certified?
It may take just a few days to get certification in terms of completion of your confined and open water dives. You can take the classroom testing portion online or opt for home study through local dive shops.

How in shape do I need to be?
There is no hard and fast rule to this, but you should be in fairly good health, able to tread water for at least 10 minutes and be able to swim a good distance without tiring. You can’t have any serious medical problems, and you should have a strong heart in particular. It’s a good idea to be cleared by your doctor first before taking a diving instruction course.

What equipment do I need?
You probably want your own basic scuba gear, such as fins, mask and snorkel. As you get more advanced, you may want to invest in your own dive regulator, weight system, wet suit, dive computer and scuba tank.

People who wish to obtain their certification and licenses through courses can seek out private lessons, or head to a local pool or gym to take public lessons. Either way, they can learn SCUBA (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) from PADI-certified instructors.

Whether one-on-one or within a larger class, diving enthusiasts can learn anything from the basics to advanced levels. They learn how to breathe underwater with oxygen tanks and masks, wearing fins and wet suits. Many instructors, especially in resort areas, offer group snorkel lessons and dives, taking vacationers out to view marine life, such as fish and turtles, and even reefs and caves.

Instructors offer many services, with a goal to teach important breathing techniques for offshore and onshore diving. They must point out the safety aspects of diving, and go over all equipment and procedures needed to ensure a safe dive. Whether for recreation, training, or professional purposes, diving is a precise sport, and safety precautions must be followed.

If you love the ocean or lakes, learn to scuba dive from the pros. These professionals can teach one student at a time, or many at once. They should possess excellent communication skills, a love for the water, good teaching skills, and technical proficiency in diving.

Many scuba diving equipment shops have certified divers on hand that offer lessons on the side for deep diving, for example. Such shops may sell all sorts of snorkel and scuba supplies, from masks and wet suits to diving logs and watches.

Diving instruction schools may offer classes online. Many sites provide e-learning as a flexible study option to learning the art of diving. Courses may include scuba, dive theory, advanced open water diver, and scuba tune-up. Qualified deep dive instructors should have the proper certification to teach students this fun sport.
