Important Terms to Know About Scrap Plastics
Plastic, a synthetic material that is easily formed and molded when soft, can harden into a variety of objects, like bottles, bins and containers. When manufacturers of wholesalers have left-over plastic that they can’t utilize in their operations, they sell that scrap in bulk to other companies who can use it. The plastic can be effectively recycled for other uses. It goes through a regrinding process before being sold to companies that need it. Wholesalers of plastic scrap may also sell metal, rubber or paper scrap. Here are some important terms to know about scrap plastics.

Post-Consumer Waste: Plastic packaging discarded by the consumer.

PET Bottle Recycling: These bottles are made of polyethylene terephthalate and can be recycled to reuse their materials and reduce landfill waste. PET is signified with a number one on the recycling symbol.

High-Density Polyethylene: Known as HDPE for short, this polyethylene thermoplastic is created from petroleum. This frequently recycled material is indicated as number 2 as its recycling symbol.

Polystyrene: A polymer made from styrene, which is a monomer, plus a liquid hydrocarbon made from petroleum. Polystyrene by its very nature can either be thermoset or thermoplastic.

Monomer Recycling: A process where a condensation polymer is involved in the inverse polymerization reaction that was used to make it.

Thermal Depolymerization: Known as TDP for short, this process utilizes hydrous pyrolysis to reduce complex organic materials, into a crude oil form. Similar to the natural geological process involved in making fossil fuels, this process requires pressure and heat.

Providing their clients with a wide range of services means that scrap plastic companies must employ several types of workers. These employees include factory workers, salespersons, and project managers. Factory workers at the scrap company need to know how to use industrial equipment to recycle and regrind plastic bottles, hard resins, and composite materials. This allows the company to turn used products into a material that other manufacturers want to purchase. The factory workers need to pay close attention to safety rules and follow directions closely. Salespersons working for the company should know about the different types of polymer materials that they sell. Knowing about different types of flexible polymers, hard resins, and composite materials allows them to target the interests of companies working in various fields. For instance, they would know what types of recycled plastic scraps will appeal to those working in agricultural fields. They can then offer the product at a reasonable price to attract new buyers. Project managers working for the suppliers will need to develop recovery strategies that help them accumulate used plastic that can be recycled into a salable product. Some strategies involve buying scrap plastic and biodegradable materials from larger manufacturers. The scrap should come at a low price, since it relieves manufacturers of their disposal requirements. The managers can also choose to process used bottles and other products from consumers. This approach is more labor intensive, but could potentially save the company money. Then, they can regrind the scrap and sell it at a discounted rate.
