Questions to Ask When Purchasing Exercise Equipment

When you are looking to purchase equipment for a home gym, there are more things to consider than the price. Dumbbells, treadmills and ellipticals can all be expensive if you are purchasing from a retail establishment. You should determine how useful the equipment will be before purchasing. You may considered to look at used gear to save money. Before you make a purchase, consider the following questions.

  • What is my exercise goal?
Before purchasing any exercise equipment, you should determine your ultimate goal. Consider whether this piece of equipment will help you reach this goal. More important is buying something that you will be interested in using on a regular basis. You can purchase a treadmill or elliptical for a cardio workout. If you will become bored with this workout, it may not be a useful purchase. Think about weight training with dumbbells and a bench. A stationary bike is another option for your home gym.

  • Is maintenance required?
Determine whether the machine or gear you are buying will require maintenance. If you don't feel you can perform the regular maintenance that the machine needs, this will likely not be a good purchase for you to make. If you are willing to do the maintenance, find out what supplies you may need to apply to the machine.

  • Is there a warranty?
When you are making a retail purchase of an exercise machine, there will likely be a warranty. Know the length and terms of the warranty. Ask the dealer or clerk for clarification if you don't understand.

Exercise equipment retail stores need several types of employees to make sure their customers have access to dumbbells, treadmills, elliptical machines and other fitness products.

Sales associates that work for exercise equipment retailers should know the basic facts about each machine and about the products that they sell. If, for instance, the store sells treadmills and elliptical machines, the sales associates should be able to help customers choose a model that fits their needs best. If the customer wants to purchase dumbbells and weight benches, the sales associates should be able to help with that as well.

Retail stores need to make sure that they stock all of the equipment that people need for their workouts. The types of stationary bikes, cardio equipment and aerobics supplies that consumers use, however, may over time. Few personal trainers taught pilates a few decades ago. Today, however, most stores sell the mats, bands and balls used for that type of exercise. The health equipment dealers know what types of supplies to stock, because they have marketing experts who pay close attention to recent consumer trends.

Stocking the right types of home gym products and sports equipment can help a retailer meet its customers’ needs. They also, however, need managers who can find those products at cheap prices. These managers might contact wholesalers to determine which ones can offer the lowest prices for new and used body stretching machines, stationary rowing machines and other types of home gym equipment. The store can then advertise their low prices locally and online to attract new customers.
