Tip #1: Examine the Basics
Affordability and size – not just the number of bedrooms but also the size of the rooms – are the basic factors to consider when searching for an unfurnished apartment. You will also want to consider which, if any, utilities are included. Many unfurnished apartments still include larger appliances like refrigerators. If a washing machine and a dryer are not located in the flat or the building, find out where the nearest laundry facility is. Inspect the total number of apartments in the building, particularly how many are located near your prospective home. Remember that noise complaints can easily be filed against you, too. Make sure tasks like parking will not be a daily hassle. Finally, familiarize yourself with the apartment’s policies on things like pets and smoking.

Tip #2: Safety and Convenience
Location is very important. Most people don’t want to commute very far to work or school, and they don’t want to drive for miles to go grocery shopping or run errands. Aside from this, make sure your apartment is in a good neighborhood. Your neighborhood should be lit well at night, and there should be people around. Finally, make sure you will feel safe while inside your apartment. The safest buildings will have security features, like locking entrances and cameras.

Tip #3: Research Multiple Options
Shopping around will always give you an idea of what the best deal available is. Viewings should happen close together. This will give you the opportunity to compare apartments directly, and then – if you find a good one – you can put a deposit down on your favorite. Don’t rush into a lease, but don’t dawdle. Any good house, condo, or apartment will have multiple interested parties, and you don’t want to lose your opportunity. Consider whether the property is offered through a private owner or an agent. You may pay a bit more for a property that is rented through an agency, but an agency may manage repairs and other contractual obligations more professionally than a private owner.

  • How many rooms are in my unit?
    Identify how many rooms you will have. A studio usually has no separate bedroom, while a luxury apartment may have several. Kitchens and baths are standard.
