An Overview of Labor Organizations

Under the National Labor Relations Act, there are certain rights and regulations that govern the activity of labor organizations. Labor organizations are formed in any type of business, including agricultural, construction and manufacturing industries. Other industries also have local and international unions for the jobs. Whether you are a man, woman or child, you can join a union. Employees have the choice to join; they cannot be coerced by co-workers or labor activists in any way. When an agreement is reached, a collective bargaining agreement is signed that becomes binding under the law between the employer and employees.

The strike is a powerful negotiation tool used by unions. They are started by activists that make speeches about unfair working conditions. Workers are given all the information about the impending strike and then have the choice as to whether to participate. In the past, strikes often became rather violent, with fiery speeches heating up the situation. Today's strikes are typically peaceful, non-governmental affairs.
