If you have a new pet or have recently moved into a new area you will need to locate the services of a good vet. As a member of your family, you want to locate a clinic that ensures high quality care. Here are a few of the questions you will want to ask potential caregivers before making your selection.

  • Do you specialize in certain types of animals?
    While some vets see primarily domestic animals, others specialize in exotic animals such as lizards or other reptiles. They may hold special qualifications in the care of birds or in large animal care such as for horses.

  • What hours are care available?
    In addition to regular office hours, a quality doctor's office will make provisions for after hours care. They may have someone on call or be able to refer you to a 24 hour emergency clinic.

  • Are you equipped to meet a variety of healthcare needs?
    Is the office you are investigating primarily set up for dispensing medicine and routine exams or are they capable of more complex care? Can surgery and X-Rays be performed in house or will they refer you to a hospital?

  • Can you offer me references of other pet owners who have used your services?
    Personal references from clients who have used office, hospital, or emergency services are one of the most reliable sources of information for you and the best form of advertisement for the provider. Talking with another patient should give you an idea of the way the office functions from routine medicines to more serious situations.

    Some men and women work as veterinarians. Since many people have house pets these days, there is certainly a demand for animal doctors and pet hospitals. This can be a fun and rewarding line of work to say the least. After all, you get to work with all kinds of cats, birds, dogs, and exotic animals at times. Depending on who your clients or customers are, you may even work with mice, lizards, rabbits, and hamsters. If you choose to work as a veterinarian, you will likely have an assistant or two that handle some of the responsibilities when it comes to animal exams, shots, x-rays, and stool sample tests.

    There is a specific veterinarian degree needed in order to become an animal doctor in this field. Therefore you must first complete the schooling and training involved. This way you will know how to handle sick or diseased cats, dogs, birds, and other pets. At times, you may even need to work with horses. A lot just depends on the pet clinic or animal hospital you work for, and what services you offer. Often if you need to assist a horse, you need to go to the animal’s home. On a separate note, some veterinarians work in 24 hour emergency clinics. This way you can provide medicine or perform a surgery at any time in order to help a dog, frog, hamster, or rabbit.

    Depending on the type of veterinarian you are, you may treat some animals with holistic medicines as well. A lot also depends on the pet owner, and what type of routine care or emergency procedure is needed.
