Questions for Interviewing Physicians, Surgeons and Doctors

Finding a physician, surgeon or doctor that you feel comfortable with, and that you can trust serious health issues to, is not an easy task. It is important to take the time to interview potential physicians to make sure they are the right doctor to administer treatment.

  • What field of medicine do you practice?
Though this appears to be a fairly obvious question, it is still an important one to cover. Most doctors and surgeons spend the majority of their careers specializing in one field of medicine, such as orthopedics, pediatric care or general surgery. This means, you would not want your family care physician to be the same one that performs open heart surgery for you.

  • What are your credentials?
Information, such as what program the professional received their medical training from, what hospital the residency was completed in, and whether or not the doctor is up-to-date with current clinical trials, can greatly influence your decision on whether or not to work with this doctor. Physicians that have a strong background in their medical field, and that are well informed, are more likely to be able to suggest new and innovative treatments, whether for overcoming a simple infection or defeating cancer.

  • What types of facilities do you have access to? What type of professional connections?
Any time a surgeon enters a hospital room to perform surgery, he has several other professionals at his side. These can include other doctors, the anesthesiologist, and a team nurses. The staff that the doctor employs, the facilities that your physician works in, and the other professionals that assist during major medical procedures, all play an important role in the care you will receive. This is true whether you are taking your child to the pediatrician, or visiting a specialist's private practice.

All doctors start their training in a college medical school. Classes in anatomy, biology, and physiology provide essential skills. They study the different classes of prescription medications, their common uses, and correct dosages. After years of classroom preparation, the students move into family practices, private clinics, and hospitals. They work alongside licensed physicians mastering patient relations and new techniques. Residency programs take years before the student earns their license to practice medicine.

Those in a residency must spend some time in an emergency room. These shifts have long hours, but the training physicians learn valuable skills in making immediate decisions and interacting with patients.

Orthopedic medicine cares for those with bone and muscle conditions. The job requires an understanding of ligaments and tendons. Someone in orthopedics may need to perform a surgery to pin a broken bone allowing it to heal correctly. They also help repair torn ligaments and tendons.

Pediatricians care for infants and children. They make sure an infant is developing correctly. They provide support to family members if an infant or child is ill. Pediatricians interact with youngsters to reduce stress during blood tests, x-rays, and treatments that frighten younger people.

Cosmetic surgeons perform surgery options that enhance or fix physical attributes. They help repair internal facial bone structure following a serious auto accident. They also handle popular procedures like tummy tucks, brow lifts, or implants.

Doctors, surgeons, and specialists have one goal; that is to make you feel your best. Clinics, hospitals, and private practices offer a range of medical staff to help you with all your health needs.
