Before Acupuncture - Some Questions and Answers

Traditional Chinese medicine has been used successfully for thousands of years in the Far East. But only in the past couple of decades has it found widespread acceptance in the United States. These days the practices of traditional Chinese medicine are being used to treat everything from infertility to cancer and chronic back pain. The most common of these practices, acupuncture, is also one of the most confusing to Westerners. If you're considering having acupuncture treatment, here are the answers to some of the questions you might have.

  • How does acupuncture work?
The answer to this question depends on who you ask. Ask a Chinese doctor and he'll tell you that acupuncture works by stimulating the meridians in our bodies which control the flow of an energy known as Qi. When the Qi is in balance, good health is guaranteed. Ask a Western doctor and they'll tell you that no one really knows how it works, though the results suggest that it is helpful in treating chronic pain, addiction and other ailments.

  • What's the difference between acupuncture, acupressure and electro acupuncture?
Acupuncture involves the application of needles to certain key points on the body known as meridians. Acupressure is the same concept only pressure from the hands is used instead of needles. Electro acupuncture builds on the theories of acupuncture, but provides a mild electric stimulant in addition to the needle.

  • Can acupuncture cure diseases?
That's a complicated question with no real clear answer. Acupuncture has been shown to aid with weight loss, infertility and even depression. But it's not seen as a cure on its own as much as piece of the larger health puzzle. Acupuncture should be seen as just one weapon in the larger fight to maintain good health. Acupuncture should be used in conjunction with traditional medicine, not in place of it.

If you have explored alternative medicine, then you have probably found that there are several different types of practitioners in your area. These professionals often advertise themselves as acupuncturists, but they offer other services as well. Depending on the specific business, they might even hire other alternative medicine specialists to offer their patients a broader range of services that reduce pain, encourage relaxation, and help the body cleanse itself of toxins.

Acupuncture involves small needles that make some patients nervous. This form of traditional Chinese medicine, however, does not use needles that are large enough to cause pain. Instead, the thin needles are often inserted throughout the body at certain reflex points to reduce back and neck pain.

Some acupuncturists recognize that a percentage of their clients will worry about needles, so they have learned to use acupressure. Like acupuncture, this alternative medicine treatment works by engaging certain points on the body. According to Chinese and new age beliefs, this can improve fertility, create positive emotions, and treat certain diseases without using needles or medication. These practitioners might also employ massage and chiropractic treatments to reduce back pain and improve flexibility.

Massage therapy, acupuncture, and acupressure are traditional treatments that do not involve taking any medications. Some of the acupuncturists that you contact, however, might employ herbal experts who can help you choose natural medicines. Herbs have often been used to cleanse the body of toxins, treat depression, and reduce pain. This holistic therapy, however, can only heal the body and mind when it is performed by a reliable professional who has years of experience.
