Common Accounting Terminology
Accountants offer numerous financial services and advice. These services include bookkeeping, tax preparation and evaluation, the preparation of balance sheets, the preparation of income statements and auditing. If you are in need of accounting services, there are some terms you might want to understand as you research accounting firms:

Audit: The assessment of the accounting, management or processes of a business, organization, or system.

Certified Public Accountant (CPA): The title given to a college graduate with the appropriate work experience after passing the Uniform CPA exam. Certified Public Accountants complete tax returns and perform accounting, auditing and reporting for businesses and governmental agencies.

Resource Allocation: The assessment of value of a particular resource as well as the value of the exploitation of that resource.

Financial Adviser: One who provides consultation on financial matters such as estate planning, and management of investments. While accountants and financial advisers are both trained in and have knowledge of the principles of accounting, the primary difference between accountants and financial advisers is that accountants are focused on bookkeeping, statements and tax laws, whereas financial advisers are concerned with the best use of your money in terms of investments and allocations.

Annuity: A series of equal payments in equal measures of time. Rent is an example of an annuity.

Bond: A form of debt security wherein the issuer owes a debt to the holder, and is obliged to pay interest until the the principle is paid in full. The interest is termed the coupon.

Consignment: The delivery of goods to another party, called the consignee, so that the other party can sell it.

If you enjoy mathematics, finance management, and other bookkeeping activities, you may consider becoming a certified public accountant. As a CPA, you will help others in their record keeping. You also assist in filing taxes and consulting both business and private clients alike. Be prepared for a decent amount of schooling before being able to legally practice.

When looking to get into this occupation, you must first take courses in the field of study. You can enroll in these courses normally at any university or technical college and taking on an internship at a decent firm will greatly improve your skills. You will need to constantly update your computer skills, as much of what you analyze will be done online.

Customer service skills are needed in order to properly communicate during audits with corporate and home customers. In order to be a certified public accountant, you will also need the proper state licensure to operate legally. You may also acquire other certifications in addition to the CPA from the Institute of Internal Auditors, Institute of Management Accountants, and Accreditation Council for Accountancy and Taxation. Passing state examinations is also required for licensure.

CPAs also need to know all of the updated tax laws and programs in order to work with the government properly. Bookkeeping, finance and payroll skills are essential whether you work for a company or as an independent adviser since you will need to recognize mistakes made in any charter. Your customers look to you to fix honest mistakes made.
