Questions to Ask a Manufacturer

Manufacturing companies make products from raw materials for sale to wholesale and retail businesses. If you are planning to purchase merchandise from a manufacturer, there are a few questions you should consider asking first.

  • What kind of products do you manufacture?
It is important to use manufacturing companies that have the equipment and experience to produce the products you need. For example, if you want to buy cars, you will need to locate a car manufacturer. If you are planning to purchase boats or RVs, it is a good idea to use a reputable boat or RV manufacturer, to ensure quality work.

  • Do you offer any discounts to your customers?
Manufacturers sometimes offer discounts to wholesalers for large orders or repeat business. Also, some manufacturers have outlet stores where you can buy clothing or furniture for your home at reduced prices. Manufacturers also offer coupons and rebates to encourage consumers to buy their products. For instance, you may be able to get a discount on a mobile phone by submitting a mail-in rebate after purchasing a mobile phone from a retail store.

  • How long will it take to produce products for your business?
It is important that you receive products from a manufacturer in a timely manner. For instance, if you are ordering watches and need them within two weeks, you will want to be sure the manufacturing company can have the watches ready within your timeframe.

  • How much will the manufacturer charge you per item?
It is important to the success of any business that merchandise can be sold at a profit. If you sell home furniture, you will want to find a manufacturer that is going to charge you an acceptable rate for each piece you order. You may also want to ask about the costs for raw materials, like glass, metal, or plastic.
  • National Association of Manufacturers (NAM)
The NAM is the leading advocate of the pro-growth and pro-manufacturing agenda. We are dedicated to advancing and promoting manufacturing capabilities across the entire country.

Although there are fewer jobs in the manufacturing industry than in the past, manufacturers are still hiring workers for both the factory floor and ancillary purposes such as administration and sales.

Most manufacturers do not sell their products directly to the public but rather to distributors who then place them on store shelves. Products may be distributed at the local, state, national or even international level. Some items, especially consumer technology, are imported and exported extensively. As many factories are now outsourced to China and Taiwan, most goods on American shelves are technically imports.

The manufacturing industry has a history of interesting labor relations. Unions are common and collective bargaining is normal amongst factory workers and engineers. Manufacturers may also have to deal with unions amongst drivers who distribute products.

They also work with the purchase of tools and other equipment as well as raw materials such as steel, rubber and plastic. Some large companies, such as automotive manufacturers, may fabricate their own tools. The supply of raw materials is key and fluctuating prices can affect a manufacturer's business heavily. Thus, manufacturers need to develop a system to allow them to absorb rapid fluctuations rather than change prices.

A knowledge of technology is key. The modern factory worker does not simply sit at a bench and produce parts. He may oversee robots or deal with entire segments of the process. Purchasers need to understand the commodities in which they deal. Salespeople work with wholesalers and sometimes directly with large retail chains. Quality assurance is also important, with factories being inspected regularly to protect the reputation of the associated brand.

Without a manufacturing sector, there would be no computers or cell phones on our shelves and no cars in the dealerships. No matter what, the importance of manufacturers remains.
