What questions would be good to ask when purchasing retail lumber

Unless you're a lumberjack, we're guessing that you may not know everything about lumber, wood and similar material. To solidify your knowledge, asking important questions at the lumber yard will help you immensely.

  • What's the difference between soft and hard wood?
Understanding that pine is a soft wood compared with oak, which looks similar, is important for pricing and upkeep. Oak is vastly more expensive than pine, and therefore will affect your project's overall cost and upkeep.

  • Where do I purchase raw wood and logs?
Knowing where to get your lumber will also drastically affect your overall cost. Buying raw lumber for log homes requires you to purchase from a specific retailer or lumber yard. Do research as many of them are also manufactures of flooring and housing material.

  • Does it matter what kind of wood I use for my projects?
Whatever your project is, there is a particular type of wood you should use. The cost of many hard woods is much more than that of pressure treated woods. Also, you may not want to use untreated material if it will be exposed to the elements.

  • Can wood that is restored be sold at full retail cost?
Knowing where the wood came from and why it's being sold is important. You wouldn't buy a used car without knowing it's background, and the same applies with used and restored wood products.

  • Does it matter from where in the world the wood may come? In other words, if I live in a dry climate, do I need a dry wood?
All hard wood must be treated and cared for according to its origins. A tropical wood needs more treatment in a dry climate. The opposite is also true. Do some research to know how much effort you'll need to keep the wood in good condition.

Whatever construction trade your company is involved in, you will need a reputable lumber retail store for your needs. If you are a contractor, you may be able to get wholesale discounts when buying large and bulk quantities for multiple projects. Getting a cheap price on material for fences can be a real benefit. You may need pine logs for a cabin. Whatever type of timber you're in need of, your local lumber yard will be eager to help you out.

Pressure treated pine manufactured for floor planks will be available. They'll also be able to educate you on the difference between hard and soft woods. Birch, which might be made into plywood, is good for interior walls. Harder stuff like oak may be better suited for exterior trimmings on homes or boats. Mahogany, walnut and maple are also finely grained which makes them naturally resistant to the elements. Spruce is a good product to use in the making of furniture. Cherry is an excellent choice for cabinets. It is very resistant to warping and has a great natural reddish color. Rosewood also has a reddish hue and is used by artists and instrument makers. Teak is used in the construction of ships as well as for various paneling. Cedar will retain its fragrant smell for years. This makes it very popular in the making of chests and cabinets. No matter what building industry you're in, you will need quality lumber at a good retail price. Finding logs at your local yard is as easy as asking. They should be able to answer all your questions and help you make the right choices for your building needs.
