Questions to Ask a Brake Service & Repair Specialist

Nothing is more important on your car than its brakes. Before you allow anyone to touch your vehicle, consider asking a few of these questions. Even if you are doing routine service, being informed is always important.

  • Do you provide brake maintenance services in a package?
If your state does inspections, the mechanic will often check your brake system. Worn pads will need to be replaced and calipers may need to be repaired. Ask your shop how much they charge for checking the brake system.

  • Is the sound coming from my brakes normal?
If you have noticed a sound while you are driving your car, ask your specialist if it is normal. It may simply be part of the car, or even coming from the transmission. In more dangerous circumstances something may need to be repaired or changed.

  • Are brake fluid changes included?
Find out if your shop changes brake fluid. They may do this when they change other fluids such as in the radiator or transmission.

  • Is an inspection cost included in the repair?
Auto shops typically charge for giving an estimate on your brake systems. Should a pad need to be replaced, find out if the estimate charge is put toward the repair. Otherwise, you might find that your truck or car is costing you a lot more than you thought.

  • What is the legal limit for pad thickness?
If you are concerned that your auto shop is trying to fix something that doesn't need it, find out exactly what they are doing. For example, they may think that a pad needs to be replaced when it may get more mileage out of it. However, it is also a good idea to keep your car's brakes in good condition, so always err on the side of caution.

"I had bought a buggy and wanted them to fix some of the problems with the car. Mechanic had told me a price and a date I could pick up the car. It took $800 more then we agreed in the beginning and a week longer then expected. My car was the only car he had in his garage and he still couldn't find time to finish it. It seemed like he had another job on the side. Don’t take it there. Most expensi ..."

Garages and auto body shops can help automobile owners keep their brake systems in fine working order. Correct maintenance or replacement procedures can accordingly avert accidents and resultant injury, damage and death. If drivers do not possess any particular expertise as to the workings of their own vehicles, they should generally hire professionals to inspect their automobiles. These procedures might accordingly determine the need either for simple repairs or for all-out replacements.

The repairs or changed parts sought after by a garage customer can depend both on the kind of vehicle involved and the type and severity of wear to which it has been subject. Mechanics might be able to adequately service lighter-weight vehicles with used components. On the other hand, trucks could impose the need for newer and more durable brakes. Other kinds of high-performance vehicles might require locking mechanisms, allowing for the independent operation of front and rear brakes.

Cars might also require different brake parts to be changed or substituted. Manufacturers often turn out these systems in the particular style of brake pads. The overall brake will be stored in a component called the caliper, and transfer friction energy through disc brakes. As related matters, radiators, tires and pedals could also be replaced.

A repeated period of driving cars could also require other maintenance procedures on sections and functions beyond the pad. For one, the transmission of a car might need to be maintained. Aside from transmission, brake fluid might also need to be kept up. Before referring to mechanics for brake upkeep, car owners may want to refer to their manuals. Due diligence can thus preserve the life and safety of drivers, passengers and pedestrians alike.
