Important Terms Related to Mobile and Manufactured Home Transporting
The following are some important terms related to transporting mobile or manufactured homes.

Crawler: Crawlers are special machines that can get your mobile or manufactured home into an area that toters and other towing vehicles cannot. Like toters, crawlers also connect with your home’s hitch.

Escort Car: An escort car travels with a toter. The safety of the mobile or manufactured home, the carrying vehicle, and other vehicles on the road is very important, and it is the job of the escort car driver to help ensure this safety. Escort cars are equipped with special signs, lights, and other equipment.

High Pole Escort Car: A high pole escort car travels in front of the toter. A pole is attached to the escort car, and this pole is higher than the toter or the home being transported. The job of the high pole escort car is to ensure no bridges or hanging obstacles will damage – or be damaged by – the oversized load.

Hitch: The hitch of a mobile or manufactured home is essential for its transport. This is a triangular metal part onto which a toter, crawler, or other towing machinery can be attached.

Hitch Coupler: This is the equipment that allows the attachment of the hitch to the towing equipment. Hitch couplers can include a pindle or a ball attachment.

Pindle Hitch: Pindle hitches are heavier duty than other hitch couplers. They have a solid metal ring that the hitch locks into.

Toter: A toter is the common truck that is used for transporting mobile or manufactured homes. While there are various hitches and truck beds that can be used for mobile or manufactured home transport, almost all toters are altered diesel tractors.

The most important career involved in the transportation of manufactured homes is that of a truck driver. Truck drivers are skilled individuals that are specifically licensed to drive larger vehicles, like semi trucks or dump trucks, packed with heavy loads. Therefore, these trained transporters are essential when it comes to hauling half of a previously assembled modular or manufactured house across the country on nothing but a trailer. In order for truck drivers to be allowed to haul these items, they are required to hold a current commercial motor vehicle license. They are also under strict regulation as to the number of hours they can drive before stopping to rest, and must keep a log book. So, when they are transporting single or double wide manufactured homes up the road, they must stop after a certain number of hours, then continue on after resting. Dealers are another important part of mobile and manufactured homes transporting. Though they do not perform the delivery of the modular homes themselves, they work as an important resource in setting up new owners with transportation and towing companies for their mobile homes. Dealers are the ones that are actually selling the mobile homes, trailers, and campers. They typically sell both new and used, and may even have special sales where customers can buy tow trucks to hitch their trailers up to at discounted rates. Motor homes, trailers and campers are usually much cheaper than a manufactured home. In addition, dealers may also offer payment plans if the initial price on is too high for customers. They are an excellent resource for finding out about mobile home parks in the area, or finding the right camper shell to go over a truck bed. Because of this, they are almost as important as the drivers!
