Freight Trucking Terminology
Freight motor trucking is the most common method of large cargo transport within the United States. Although far slower that air travel, it is the least expensive way to ship goods across the country. Here is a list of terms commonly used in the freight shipping industry:

Reefer: A trailer with a self powered refrigeration unit and insulated walls for transporting perishables.

Liftgate Service: Shipping companies add liftgate service whenever the loading or unloading area is not equipped with a loading dock and the cargo must be manually removed from or loaded into the vehicle. The term "liftgate" comes from a platform in some trucks that can mechanically lift and lower cargo.

Accessorial: The lists of services outside standard shipping procedures. These services often include liftgate services, residential service, arrival notification and COD.

Flatbed: A trailer without sides or roof, designed to carry extremely heavy, highly durable and non-perishable items. Flatbed trucks can carry nearly anything that can be stacked on board.

Logistics: The umbrella term for all of the factors in the transportation of industrial and commercial goods from point of origin to point of destination. This includes warehousing, transit, security, information management, handling and packaging.

Freight Class: The National Motor Freight Classification's method of categorizing the load of a shipment. The class is determined by the weight, size and value of the load, as well as the shipping difficulty.

Tanker: A trailer designed to carry combustible and non-combustible liquids such as gasoline and milk.

Dry Bulk Trailer: A semi-trailer or tanker designed to carry bulk dry powdered goods such as flour and sugar.

When you have freight that needs to be moved from your store or warehouse to a new destination, motor trucking is one of the most popular options versus air rail. Choosing a carrier for domestic or international hauling can be a difficult decision and there are a few questions to consider during the meeting.

  • Should I go with a company or an independent contractor?
A freight company has a fleet and tends to be more professional and have an excellent logistics system. An independent contractor is more personal and takes responsibility for any problems, instead of burying the customer in red tape.

  • Why is freight delivery by motor better than air and rail travel?
Interstates and highways connect almost all towns in the United States and in international countries as well. Air travel can only ship to major cities with airports, and rail can only haul products to towns that have railroads going through them.

  • Is my shipment insured?
When disaster strikes, such as a car accident, or if the load is damaged in transit, it is important that the carrier has insured the product. The insurance should cover the cost of the shipment.

  • What are typical rates per mile?
For delivery of bulk items within 100 miles, the typical rates are between $3-$5 per mile. That rate makes it worthwhile for the driver. For long haul trucking over 100 miles, rates decrease to $1 to $1.50 per mile. The driver gets more money overall, because of the greater distance.

  • What needs to be hauled via freight carrier?
Anything that is not taken by hand is taken by a freight carrier, from mail to express package delivery. Companies use a mix of air, rail and motor haulers to deliver small packages in bulk. Larger equipment and products ship via companies using logistics.
