Counselors Licensed

Licensed counselors are not necessarily psychiatrists. Psychiatrists are medical mental health doctors who can prescribe medication and offer a deeper level of psychotherapy or other treatment services. Counselors must be licensed and should also have a degree in social work or psychology.

Many counselors work within a social work agency, helping people work through their abuse, drug and alcohol addiction, or depression issues. This may involve regular therapy sessions in a clinical setting, or home visits via a social worker. Doctor’s offices can give people referrals to reputable licensed counselors in the area.

When a prospective patient contacts a licensed counselor, he or she can expect a brief chat with the receptionist to go over availability, scheduling, health insurance coverage, and basic patient information. The receptionist can schedule an appointment at a mutually agreeable time. The patient may wish to have a consultation with the counselor beforehand to test the waters and ensure compatibility. Many times, these consultations are free.

Licensed counselors trained in psychology and mental health issues should have a patient demeanor, and be willing to work with patients of all ages, young and old. Above all, they should be great listeners with excellent communication skills. They must adhere to confidentiality agreements and keep all sessions private, whether the issues involve help with Christian couples therapy, stress, anxiety, physical abuse, or school pressures.

Some counselors are MFTs, which means they are marriage and family therapists. They focus on the family unit, as it pertains to the married couple and their relationship.

"This doctor was very unprofessional, late, and clearly has no clue of how to treat people. I arrived at my appointment about 20 minutes early to complete paperwork. The receptionist was very nice and offered me drinks and made the call to the doctor to inform him of my arrival and appointment time. However, the doctor didn’t show up for almost an hour!!! When he did arrive, he came around the back ..."

Licensed counselors are trained professionals who can help people with personal mental and emotional issues that stem from family abuse, substance dependency, relationship problems, difficulty being assertive with peers, social phobias, self-esteem, and other issues. When you contact the professional counselors, ask them if they specialize in a certain type of treatment. Most counselors who have been practicing for several years should understand a variety of treatment options that can help you reach your goals through personal growth. Some counselors, though, might focus with relationship and family issues like abuse and divorce. Others might focus on treatments for depression, drug abuse, or career development. Ask the counselors if they provide evaluations that help them determine if you can receive outpatient counsel or if you should check into a hospital's psychiatric unit. Some cases need more intense inpatient support to get the care they need to reach stabilization. Professional evaluations should also help your counselor determine what treatment plans are best for you. If you are seeking help from a counselor for someone else like a child, friend, or family member, then you should be sure that they treat people who are the patients' ages so that their needs will be met. You should also ask them about intervention strategies and ways that you can find the right authority to get the person the help they need. Be sure to pay close attention to the level of courtesy the counselors use when answering your questions. If you or a friend is going to receive the personal emotional care help that is needed, you will need a counselor that knows how to speak to people.
