Ironwork Questions

Maybe you have decided it's time to decorate your yard with a iron fence. Or perhaps you want to create an impressive ornamental iron staircase as a showpiece in your home. All of this, and much more can be done through ironwork, the skill of manipulating iron into beautiful creations of art. Ironwork is a highly specialized field that the novice buyer enters with many questions. This guide will help address some of them.

  • What type of ironwork do you want?
There are two main divisions of ironwork. Wrought iron, the oldest form of ironwork, is still to this day produced by hand by a blacksmith, an artist who works with iron by hammering on an anvil. Today, wrought iron is commonly used for decorative work on gates, and filigree-type work. Cast iron, on the other hand, is created by heating iron in a furnace and then pouring into a mold when hot. Cast ironworks are not as decorative as wrought ironworks, and are typically used for fences and rails.

  • Is there a cost difference?
Yes. Because wrought iron is made by hand, it will be more expensive than cast iron. Consider the outcome of the project and the impact you want to make when selecting your materials. Remember, to save money you can often mix and match. For example, a cast iron fence with a wrought iron gate as a centerpiece will save you a good deal of money when compared to making an entire fence out of wrought iron rail.

  • Where can you buy?
While you can buy ironwork in retail and online stores, sometimes you may want to deal with a blacksmith directly. A qualified blacksmith should be well trained and may belong to an association such as the Artist Blacksmith Association of North America (ABANA).

Some individuals work as professional iron workers. This can be an excellent field for men and women who enjoy working with wrought iron, welding tools, and other metals like brass and copper. As you may know, in this field, you will often create custom driveway gates, fences, and handrails for staircases. However, you may also work on ornamental light fixtures, bathroom towel hooks, and other hardware for home interiors. This can be a physically challenging line of work, but it also allows you to work on your own a lot. Since ironwork is often needed across the country, there are many opportunities in this field.

Initially you will need the right kind of schooling and training if you plan to do ironwork and metal welding. Some professionals in this field study under expert blacksmiths to learn this craft. You can certainly expect to handle metal casting equipment, as well as large hammers and welding tools. These are tools that are needed to deal with wrought iron, and create unique furniture, artwork, and hardware to decorate homes. While you may need to design and create a custom handrail for one client, you may need to build a wrought iron gate or fence for another. Some clients may need balcony architectural fixtures or hardware for a restaurant, while others may require brass lanterns for a home’s exterior.

In this business, you can expect to work with a variety of clients on a daily basis. Some of the custom jobs you do will certainly take more time and effort than others.
