Golf Course Terms for New Golfers

Golf is one of those "clubby" sports that might be intimidating to outsiders. Many golfers, it seems, picked up a club when they were infants. These same golfers must have learned everything they needed to know about the rules and equipment of the game before they could walk. But that's not how it is for the rest of us. What follows are some commonly asked questions from beginning golfers.

  • What's the difference between woods and irons?
Golf equipment terms normally refer to what the head of the club is made from. Woods are normally used for longer shots and irons for shorter ones.

  • Do I really need a whole bag full of clubs or can I just get away with having a few?
This really depends on where you're golfing. If you're on a par 3 course, all you really need is a putter, an eight iron and very controlled swing.

  • Can anyone really qualify for a PGA Card?
Any amateur golfer can compete in events that qualify him or her to play at the professional level.

  • My local golf course has a great restaurant, can I have my wedding there?
It varies from place to place but, yes, many public golf courses host weddings and other events.

  • What's the difference between miniature golf and a pitch 'n' putt?
Miniature golf is at kids and features elaborate, and silly, putting greens. A pitch 'n' putt looks like a small golf course and includes putting and an approach shot.

  • Do I need to know someone to get a tee time?
Again, it depends on where you're golfing. Most public courses have online reservation system that can be accessed by anyone.
  • National Golf Course Owners Association
Find a public golf course in your local area through our nationwide association dedicated to the owners of golf courses. Providing the largest nationwide directory of public golf courses.

If there's one thing that public golf courses offer, it's community access. Anyone can play at such a facility, from individuals to teams. Such grounds may be found on resorts, estates, or country clubs, and are often referred to as municipal golf courses. Different from private courses, which require exclusive membership, public courses allow anyone who pays the charges and greens fees to tee off or use the driving range to hit some balls.

Many public golf courses have websites, where golfing enthusiasts can check out seasonal rates, take a virtual tour, print out a scorecard, book a tee time, and view photos of the greens. They can also contact the course to find out about tournament information for local sports teams, retreats, and general facility information.

Some public golf courses offer a little something extra on site, such as mini golf for kids, batting cages, and even refreshments like ice cream. They can consist of entire recreational complexes, offering a wide range of activities for young and old. Other services may include lessons by golf pros and promotions like a free bucket of balls during certain days of the week.

If you don't have your own clubs, there's no need to fret. You can rent a set of clubs, consisting of putters, pitching wedges, and drivers, or you can purchase your own in the pro shop, along with other accessories. Golf courses may feature a restaurant or pub on site, carts, putting greens, a clubhouse facility, and a pro shop.

Public golf courses usually play host to a range of skill levels. The grassy greens, holes, and driving ranges should be clean, with expert staff on hand to assist players if need be.
