Three Questions You Must Ask Your Doctor

With medical insurance costing a fortune, many families skip coverage and hope for the best going to the doctor only when necessary. For those who have medical insurance, restrictions by the company make it difficult to receive treatments or tests that the company feels are unnecessary. Some don't cover eye exams at all despite the importance of vision. Take charge and demand the right services for everything from repeat nose bleeds to cancer screenings. Before making an appointment with a physician, patients should ask three questions to make sure they're getting the best healthcare.

  • How do your doctors handle after hour emergencies?
Many children develop fevers, strep throat, or nose bleeds after normal office hours. Rather than open the office after hours, some practitioners send clients to the emergency room. ER fees are much higher and may well be unaffordable. If this is the case, look for physicians who are on-call and willing to open their office or who work with a 24-hour clinic.

  • What are your suggestions regarding important screenings like mammograms?
Some groups now suggest women no longer need mammograms until they're 50, so practitioners no longer urge women to get them until then. If you have relatives who had breast cancer, it may be risky to delay the exam. It's important that your practitioner will order exams, even if the guidelines are against it.

  • How often should I come see you for check-ups?
Check-ups are usually recommended annually. If you have an illness or condition like diabetes or asthma, it's important to follow your practitioner's recommendations which may mean going to have your heart, lungs, and throat checked every few months. Eye and ear exams are usually recommended every 48 months.

Some medical experts work as doctors and specialty physicians. This is a very involved type of work that calls for a great deal of school and training. In fact, most doctors must first acquire a bachelor’s degree, and then proceed through medical school, which is followed by a residency at a hospital. It does not matter if you are an eye doctor, plastic surgeon, or ear, nose and throat specialist. The proper schooling and training is essential in the medical field. However, as you may know, medical physicians often have high salaries. This can certainly be a very hectic line of work at times, but it can also be quite rewarding.

As a family doctor, or dermatologist, that focuses on skin disorders, you can work in various towns and cities across the nation. After all, doctors, nurses, and surgery experts are needed all over the United States. While there are specialty foot doctors, who are called podiatrists, there are also pediatric physicians that deal with child health care and medicine. Depending on the hospital or medical clinic you work at, the volume of patients you deal with daily may vary. However, sick patients that see you will typically need to make an appointment ahead of time.

Just so you are aware, the amount of training you will need may vary, depending on whether you are an eye doctor, ear, nose and throat specialist, or orthopedic surgeon. In this field, you may have to deal with internal body x-rays, blood testing, disease cures, and even heart transplants.
