Home Care Services – Questions to Ask

The choice between home health care and a hospital or a nursing home can be a difficult one. The cost, the medical needs of the patient and the impact of home care on the rest of the family are all factors that should be considered. Here are some questions to ask when exploring home health care options.

  • What is home care?
Several businesses provide home care for seniors, the disabled, or anyone who needs help recovering from a medical procedure. Some hire a qualified nurse, while others will send a professional caregiver who may not possess a nursing degree, but can provide many of the basic home health services.

  • What services do home care professionals provide?
Services will depend on each individual patient. Typical services include preparing meals with dietary restrictions, making sure mediation is taken, assisting with physical therapy, encouragement and support, and providing a respite for other members of the family.

  • Are caregivers insured and bonded?
Even non-medical personnel should qualify with their employers for caregiver positions, by passing a background check and being covered by general liability insurance.

  • What is home hospice care?
Hospice care is a special discipline of nursing care and support for patients in the final stage of a terminal illness. Many seniors facing these circumstances prefer to remain at home, where they are visited by professional caregivers that tend to their physical, psychological and spiritual needs.

  • Who pays for home health care?
Check with Medicare or Medicaid to see if they will cover home care services. Often these programs provide a respite from health care costs for low-income families. Private insurance may also cover home care.
  • National Association for Home Care & Hospice
Our leading trade organization represents the interests of hospice services, home care, and more. Find out more about how we are committed to furthering the industry to provide the best care for our patients.

If you are searching for an agency offering home care services, you want to be sure to choose a company that is safe, reliable and trustworthy for yourself or your family members. You can begin your search by creating a list of as many caregivers, companions, and nursing companies that you can find in order to contact them for further information and care services. First, ask friends and members in your community that have been in a similar situation what medical providers or health support agencies that they have used to care for their senior family members. You can also use the phonebook or internet as additional resources to find nurses. Once you have compiled the list, begin to contact the companies and ask them about the services that they offer. Do they have companions that will assist your elderly family member with bathing, taking medication, and maintaining a proper diet by consuming balanced meals? Do they provide in home, personal nursing care? Also ask each agency if they are affiliated with hospice care, as this might be a necessary, and possibly more affordable, option. If you are the primary caretaker of the patient, it is your responsibility to ensure that the medical staff that comes to the home, or the facility where the senior may be residing, is helpful and respectful, as well as being affordable. Ask all of the questions necessary, and also ask the company for references. When you contact the references, ask about the company's record for customer service, private health care, assisted living, and about the nurses that they have working for them. Be sure that you are comfortable with the choice you are making before committing to one service.
