Entertainment agents are skilled management professionals. A talent agency hires administrative staff, but the agents themselves work in a highly specialized area.
An entertainment agent needs to have knowledge of the industry itself and of their client's work. They need to be able to work with both the sometimes difficult personalities of artists and with customers who may be planning out an important event such as a wedding or a corporate conference. They need to keep an eye on their client's career, and make plans that are to his or her benefit.
They need to be on good terms with clubs and other venues and able to set an appropriate price. Bookings are often made months in advance and emergencies can happen, such as a client falling ill. In the case of casting agencies, they may work with a production and director in an extended manner.
Where a talent agency works with adult entertainers, they need to be able to handle the specific needs of private and gentlemen's clubs. Both male and female strippers and exotic dancers are hired for bachelor and bachelorette parties. In this day and age, the ladies cannot be left out. They also need to protect their clients from the possibility of customers overstepping the mark, or an adult party going too far.
Those that manage the careers of bands, especially dance bands, are often required to provide live music for weddings. They may also be hired for a birthday or anniversary party. Comedy talent is also often hired for these events, as are DJs. Agents need to deal with requests that might sometimes appear strange. Modeling agencies work with designers and clothing manufacturers.
Talent agents work in a variety of fields, but the consistent factor is that they handle their client's business affairs.
