Questions to Ask a Small Appliances Repairman

Considering the impressive number of small appliances used in the average kitchen, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll have to get one or more of them fixed. If you are going to call a repairman, there are a few questions that you should keep in mind.

  • Do you specialize in this kind of repair job?
Repairmen aren’t all alike. There is an important difference between those with the expertise to handle small appliances, such as coffee makers, and those with expertise in major appliances, such as refrigerators. The mechanical and electrical design of a toaster oven is very different from that of a washing machine.

  • Do I have to bring in the defective item?
Though small appliances are by definition portable items, it’s not always practical to transport one to the shop for repairs. For example, you might have your microwave oven affixed to a wall in your kitchen. In this case, the repairman may be able to make a home visit, but you will likely have to pay an additional charge.

  • Should I have the appliance repaired or replaced?
Some appliances are so inexpensive that it would be cheaper to replace household items of this sort than to have them repaired. Getting a price estimate before repairs are done will help you make this decision.

  • Do you have any spare parts?
Often, it is not necessary to replace household appliances if only a single part is defective. If so, then you may be able to perform the work yourself and avoid paying labor fees.

  • What are the recycling laws in this area?
If repair costs prove to be too high, don’t just throw that electric grinder or blender into the trash can. Check with your repairman to ensure that you follow recycling laws in your vicinity.
  • Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers
The National Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers is a trade organization with members that include fabrication, repair and service companies.

Small appliance repair is a rewarding field to venture into, but it also takes a decent amount of schooling to be successful. Be prepared to become familiar with several different electric devices, wiring and small parts for appliances in the kitchen and other parts of the home.

Many community colleges and trade schools offer courses in this area. Make sure the courses are well rounded before paying for them, unless you wish to focus on just a few small kitchen appliances to fix, like toaster ovens, microwaves, coffee grinders or coffee makers. Don't limit yourself too much with the appliances you specialize in, because you may end up facing employment issues later. You can also see if online or correspondence courses are available if you need to learn at a faster or slower pace than what the college courses can offer. It also cannot hurt to get electrical training from any of these places of learning, just in case you run across a cooking appliance that you are unfamiliar with.

Since many repair shops are family owned and operated, you may be able to get an apprenticeship or position with them. These professionals will be able to give you working knowledge on how to repair and replace household items. A certain company may be willing to train you in repairing residential and commercial appliances

Customer service training is necessary in this field, since you'll be dealing directly with wholesale parts dealers, and unfortunately sometimes frustrated customers. You'll have to be able to maintain professionalism while you tell an angry customer that he'll just have to replace household items like the blender and food processor if you are unable to fix them.
