Common Video Game Terms
A video game is an electronic device that involves human interaction and a user interface which generates a visual and audio feedback. With the immense popularity of both console and computer games, it is not surprising that there are many terms that refer to particular parts of video games and their various components. The following are some common terms relating to video games.

Backward Compatible: Backward compatible refers to the ability of a gaming console to run games from a previous model of the console. For example, some PlayStation 3 consoles cannot run PlayStation 2 games, which means they are not backward compatible.

Cut-scene: This is a part of a video game during which players are not able to control anything. Cut-scenes are put in video games to further the storyline, often after boss fights or other major events.

MMOG: A MMOG, or massively multiplayer online game, puts many players together in the game’s world. MMOGs require strategy and cooperation among players to complete more difficult objectives, though easier tasks may be accomplished independently. There are MMOGs for consoles and computers.

NPC: NPCs, or non-player characters, are characters in a video game that are not controlled by a person. Players can usually interact with NPCs.

RTS: RTS, or real time strategy, is a genre of video game. RTS games are designed to challenge players’ reasoning and foresight. RTS games often require a player to take charge of a location’s military or economy. Typically, a town or an army must be created, improved, and maintained in order to complete an objective.

Sandbox: In sandbox video games the game’s objectives can be ignored. This freedom allows for unrestricted enjoyment of the game’s world. For example, if the player does not want to complete a certain task immediately, they can move on to something different.

The video game and arcade business is a major industry. Therefore, many people approach this field to earn a living. Technology only improves as time moves on, and there is plenty of money to be made in game consoles, online computer games, and virtual reality. Since so many kids and adults enjoy gaming regularly, all sorts of people are constantly purchasing new video games, guitar accessory controls, and new additions to their home consoles. As a dealer in this business, you can both buy and sell new and used video games, consoles, and controllers, as well as phone products.

Depending on what part of the video game industry you wish to work in, an education may be necessary. If you want to be a game creator, you will probably need a computer science degree or something along the lines of graphic design. This way you will know how to deal with RPG issues, game action strategy, cheat codes, sound rhythm, and sports graphic technology. For those who wish to manufacturer video games, this generally requires on-the-job training. To become a distributor, you may be better off acquiring a degree in business. Regardless of what branch of this business you work in, it is always a good idea to play the arcade and home console games to get a better idea of how they work.

When you get involved with the video game industry, it is probable that you will work with game reviewers who play the products for a living, arcade owners, electronics stores, and console manufacturers at times. You may also have to deal with an array of consumers online and in person who purchase new and used cartridge games.
