When you are on the market for towing accessories, there are several items you can purchase. You can shop online for used or discount items or go to a hardware store for a larger selection. If you are unsure on what you need, ask a store clerk for clarification. Before you start shopping here are a few questions to ask yourself or an industry professional.

  • What are you looking to tow?
    Before you get your trailer hitch setup, you need to determine what you plan to tow. You may be able to purchase an extender bar to handle larger loads that won't fit into the flatbed of your truck. You may be looking to tow your utility boat or bike rack. Racks and utility boats will have different accessories that are necessary.

  • What size is your trailer hitch?
    You may need to purchase an adapter for your trailer hitch. This depends on the size of the hitch and the receiver. A common hitch adapter will allow a 1-1/4" hitch receive a 2" insert.

    Trailer hitches can be sold as kits for self-install or they can be installed by the manufacturer. Many new trucks and SUVs come with hitches already installed and wired.
