Terms to Know Before Visiting a Tack Shop
Horseback riding can be a fun, and sometimes challenging, hobby. It can be quite a learning experience getting used to specific equipment and terminology related to horseback riding. More equipment is involved in horseback riding than just a saddle and reins, and for a complete outfitting of equestrian accessories, visit a tack shop. The following are a few terms to know before beginning your shopping trip in a tack shop.

Britchin: A britchin is used to help prevent a saddle from sliding forward. It is a leather strap that fits over the back end of an animal. Cruppers are similar equestrian accessories, though they fit around the tail of an animal. Britchins and cruppers are most commonly used when riding mules.

Halter: A halter is a particular type of headstall designed for leading an animal as opposed to riding one.

Headstall: A headstall is made of leather straps and is fitted on an animal’s head. The headstall, bit, and reins are all part of the bridle.

Hobbles: Hobbles are particularly important for when a horse is not properly enclosed. They are straps that are secured around the legs of an animal so that it cannot run off.

McCarty: A McCarty is just a long, smooth rope. This rope, which is usually attached to the bit or noseband, can be used as both a lead rope and a rein.

Morral: A morral is a bag that can be strapped to an animal’s snout for feeding purposes. This method of feeding prevents waste and ensures each animal consumes only its own portion.

Shoo-fly: A shoo-fly is essentially a tassel that is attached to an animal’s tail. The swinging shoo-fly helps keep away bugs.

"I would recommended for people who need inexpensive/ good quality equipment. I am a young equestrian, and I go to Cedar Knoll because I don't have a lot of money. They aren't stocked up very well on items (and they run out easily), but the items are good quality, so that makes up for it. ..."

Retail tack shops may be located in strip malls, stand-alone buildings, specialty boutiques, and online. Some specialize in Western and English saddlery or even riding apparel, while others focus on care items such as feed, brushes, tools, and related accessories.

Stable owners often keep a steady supply of items like leads, bridles, bits, and reins on hand. They may buy in bulk from wholesalers to get a discount. When equestrians need to buy supply items like stirrups, head gear, halters, and harnesses, they can either call the shop to get more information, visit the website, or visit the store.

Visiting in person affords the customer a better opportunity to touch and feel the horse supply items, from lead ropes and bridles to blinders and crops. Sales associates can let the customer know what sales are going on at the moment. They may also provide gift wrap, shipping and delivery of items like packs and lines, and even installation of larger items if need be. Customers can try on riding apparel in person to check for proper sizes.

When buying online, customers have other advantages, such as access to virtual help, free quotes, web-only deals, and online ordering and tracking. Most tack shops also provide repair and maintenance on anything from bridles to saddlery. Information about these services should appear on their websites. Many websites are categorized by things like dressage, eventing, books, horse supplements, and grooming supplies. Products may be on sale according to seasonal needs or closeouts, from blankets to whips to packs.

Overall services offered by tack shops may include blanket cleaning and repair, boot stretching, custom book measurements, leather repair and reconditioning, and certified saddle fittings. Customers should expect to deal with knowledgeable personnel experienced in all areas of the equestrian business.
