Terms for Siding Materials
Siding is a very important component in the building of a home; it is not only aesthetically pleasing, but it protects the framework of the house from water absorption and weather damage. Here are a few terms for types of siding, materials and techniques:

Cladding: In construction, cladding is the layering of materials for the purpose of providing protection from harsh weather conditions.

Tongue and Groove: The ridge and groove along the edge of planks and boards meant to be fitted edge to edge. The ridge on one board fits into the groove of another. It is used primarily with wood materials.

Clapboard Siding: A style of siding that features horizontally placed overlapping wood boards.

PVC: Polyvinyl chloride. An extremely durable and inexpensive plastic used as piping, window frames and wire insulation.

Membrane Roofing: A roofing system for flat buildings that is meant to prevent leakage and help channel water from the roof. Membrane roofs are commonly constructed from PVC or synthetic rubber.

Corrugated Metal Siding: Typically aluminum or galvanized steel, this is a form of siding used primarily in industrial buildings, although it is occasionally seen on modern homes. It is a durable finish, with a pleated, accordion-like texture.

Shake Siding: Irregular wood shingle siding, typically made from cedar. Seen in 19th century Queen Anne style architecture.

Vinyl Siding: Plastic siding made from PVC. It is the most common form of cladding for residential instruction in the United States and Canada.

Masonry Siding: Brick or stone siding. Masonry siding is extremely durable and requires very little maintenance over its lifespan, which is often approximately 100 years.

For those that are involved in the construction industry, you may be looking into purchasing siding material. If you run a construction supply company, or you work as a contractor, you should be able to work with the manufacturer to get wholesale pricing on your materials, especially if you are willing to order in bulk. Below are a few questions to focus on as you begin your search for a manufacturer to work with.

  • What are your requirements to get wholesale pricing on an order?
Since wholesale is such a decrease in price over the standard retail, it can save you a great deal of money on any job you are working on, or any supplies you are ordering for your company. If you are working a small job, for instance, and only need a small order of vinyl siding, you will want to get the best price possible for your clients. You will probably have to end up doing some shopping around.

  • What materials can your company supply?
Siding can be made from many different materials. It can include shingles, PVC vinyl, metal, wood, and more. The choice of siding will obviously depends on what the client wants when building his or her home. However, you will need to be able to supply the shingles, cedar or aluminum that your client demands. Make sure that manufacturer you are working with can meet all of these demands for you!

  • Can you provide past customer recommendations?
Simply because the company you are working with offers the PVC vinyl, or the hardwood that you need to stock, it does not mean that these are quality building materials. Testimonials from past clients can help you make a decision between different businesses.
