Questions for Shelters

Shelters are places of refuge where people and animals can sleep and get a bite to eat. There are a wide range of shelters, from animal shelters who help lost pets and homeless animals get adopted, to homeless shelters who help homeless people. Furthermore, there are emergency shelters that are temporary, and post-emergency shelters, which may be long term, depending on the scope of the disaster. One thing all these shelters have in common is the need for volunteers to help them run efficiently.

  • What can I expect from volunteering at a shelter?
If you would like to help your local shelter, you should first think about what kind of work you would enjoy doing. If you like working with animals, volunteer at your local animal shelter and help with pet adoptions. If you like people, try a local homeless shelter and assist them with nightly meals. Also, consider volunteering with the Red Cross or Salvation Army for disaster relief for hurricanes, floods and earthquakes. If you do this, then you could possibly work at emergency or post-emergency shelter providing primary support for families.

  • I think I may need to use a homeless shelter. What next?
If you need assistance, don't hesitate to ask for help. Call any shelter and they can help you or direct you to someone who can. Furthermore, in most states if you call 211 you can receive assistance and information about shelters close to you.

  • I think I need to use an emergency shelter. What next?
If you need assistance for domestic abuse or violence, call 211. If you are being evacuated and need to use a shelter, listen to local news or contact the local authorities for directions on where to go. Remember, during emergencies and evacuations, it is always easier if you have a plan beforehand.

Many people enjoy giving back to their community. There are multiple places in your town that need volunteers. Local homeless shelters always need extra help, especially in this economy. More and more people are turning to these centers just to have a roof over their heads. Homelessness is also affecting animals. Family pets are abandoned because their owners can no longer afford to feed them. Other pets are rescued from abusive homes. All these animals need people who will care for them. If you cannot adopt a dog or cat yourself, you can join the ranks of those trying to arrange adoptions.

Even those who have a place to stay sometimes need to escape. Domestic violence and child abuse is becoming more common. Battered women shelters open their doors to the ladies and children who are not safe at home. If you are not able to volunteer regularly, you can still help out during emergency situations. Fires, major storms, and natural disasters force cities open up temporary. Floods, hurricanes earthquakes, and tornadoes leave destruction in their wake. These local relief centers are open to everyone who has lost their homes.

Before heading down to a shelter, be sure to call about any requirements for volunteering. Most places require positive background checks, especially those dealing with children. You may also be required to have a Tuberculosis test beforehand to make sure you will not put others at risk. Since volunteers need to be trained, you could be asked to commit to working a certain number of hours before your application is approved. Shelters do this so they do not waste time training people who do not plan to come on a regular basis. Without the volunteers at these places, so many people would be without the help they need to survive.
