Tips for Selecting a School
The following are some tips to help you select the perfect educational institution:

Tip #1: Examine the school's academic curriculum.
All educational institutes will offer a variety of basic courses such as mathematics and English. Make sure your middle school or high school student will get a rounded education, but don’t stop there. Look beyond the basics. Specialized literature or history courses, as well as foreign language classes, are always great options to have available. A college should offer your major and should have many classes that apply to your major. When applicable, make sure the school you select offers accelerated or remedial classes. Preschool should be a learning experience for your child, not just an expensive daycare.

Tip #2: Check out the goals and results of the school.
The goal of any school should be to prepare students for the next step in life. A high school will want to prepare a student for college, and a college will want to prepare students for a job. The goal of an educational institute always sounds wonderful, but make sure the school lives up to its claim. Look at details such as the percentage of students who return for another year there and what percentage of students graduate. High schools may be able to provide you with how many students continued on to a college or university, while colleges and universities may be able to provide you with how many students got a job in their select field after graduation.

Tip #3: Examine the academic setting.
Enrollment numbers don’t necessarily affect the quality of education that is received at a school. A more important factor is class size. If there is only one teacher for dozens of students, students will receive less one-on-one time with their teacher. Make sure at least most of the courses are taught by teachers or professors, not teaching aids. Examine the learning materials that are used. Textbooks should be recent. The school library should be large, up-to-date, and should contain plenty of reference materials and computers.

Sending your kids to elementary, middle or high school is a natural part of life, but also one that bears close examination. Few things are as important as a good education. For parents and students, there are options such as magnet schools, charter schools, and even online courses that are taken at home by computer. There is also the choice of relocating to a school district where the public schools are held to a higher standard. Here are a few questions to ask a school administrator or principal.

  • What are the differences between public schools, charter schools and magnet schools?
Explore all the available options to determine where your children may receive the best primary and secondary education.

  • What are the enrollment requirements?
Residence in the school district is the only pre-requisite for public elementary, middle and high school attendance. But private schools may require a certain minimum grade point average, or a test to determine each student’s current education level.

  • What is the tuition cost?
Ask about tuition and about how your children may qualify for scholarships or other incentives.

  • What type of arts courses and programs do you have?
Many public schools have been forced to make difficult budget cuts that have impacted arts and athletic programs. Ask about which courses are available as part of the regular primary school curriculum or, at the middle school and high school level, as elective courses.

  • Is there a dress code?
Many public and private schools have a dress code. This may include wearing a uniform, or simply avoiding any clothing or jewelry that is not permitted.
