A lot of us have trouble imagining life without air conditioning, which is found in a wide variety of home and office settings.   • Are they certified?
    It isn't mandatory, but it may be a good idea to seek out a repairman who carries certification from North American Technician Excellence (NATE). Also, the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) offers certification. You may wish to look for anything that indicates training in HVAC systems. (HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning.) While you're at it, you should also ask whether the repairman carries liability insurance.

  • Should the air conditioner be repaired or replaced?
    In many cases, this will be a judgment call on your part, but there are some considerations to keep in mind. Often, air conditioners are merely dirty or clogged; if so, a little cleaning will set them right. However, your air conditioner might be considerably older and less efficient than current models; if so, it may be unable to provide adequate heating or cooling, even if working correctly. A repairman skilled in HVAC system maintenance may be able to tell you--especially if he or she is able to personally visit your location--whether making an upgrade might save you money in the long run.

  • What can I do to avoid future problems?
    Many people don't realize that routine cleaning of an air conditioner can often be performed without professional help and it can extend the life of the appliance. Ask your repairman how to perform simple cleaning and maintenance tasks.
