What is the difference between a barber school and a cosmetology school?
Barber schools specialize in men's hair and skin services. This involves men's hair cutting and shaving, working with different hair textures, customer psychology, product knowledge and shop management. Cosmetology school is generally the same duration and encompasses men's hair cutting and shaving, but also includes women's styling, coloring, skin care, cosmetic application and manicuring.
What do I need to enroll?
Most barber schools require proof of high school graduation.
How long will I have to attend barber school?
Different barber schools have different hour requirements; some require 1,500 hours to complete the program, others require 2,000 hours. If you want to cross train in cosmetology or get instructor certification, you should expect to have to complete an additional 500-1,000 hours. You can expect a barber training program to last a minimum of 9 months.
How do I choose a barber school?
It's a good idea to talk to barbers whose work you know and ask them where they went to school and how they liked the programs. You'll also want to look for flexible course schedules if you'll be working while attending classes. Ask what financial aid the schools are able to offer, and if they provide assistance in finding jobs after graduation.
What kind of certification will I get when I graduate?
Barber certification programs offer hands-on courses in hair cutting, styling, shaving, skin and scalp care and tool sanitation. Technical diploma coursework includes the basic career focused training along with classroom work in sales and shop management. Full certification is achieved after completion of the barber training program and when the licensing exam is passed.
