Cold Storage Questions for Food Industry Outsiders

To food industry outsiders, climate controlled food storage facilities seem pretty simple. After all, they're just big refrigerators, right? Wrong. Stationary and mobile, cold storage containers are complicated systems. If you're a newcomer to the food industry, here are some questions that you might have about cold storage warehouses.

  • What's the difference between cool and cold storage?
The temperature in a cold storage facility is generally kept between 0-65 degrees Fahrenheit. At a cool storage facility, the temperature is going to be in the 40-65 degree Fahrenheit range. There are also dry storage facilities which are kept at room temperature and used for storing dry goods.

  • Can the cold storage facility manage logistics, too?
Some larger facilities offer transportation services like pickup and delivery of goods.

  • Are cold storage warehouses just for food?
No. Some facilities are used to store water damaged papers and books after a flood. Keeping wet papers cool prevents mold outbreaks at bay while conservators work to save the items.

  • What are some of the charges I might see besides my monthly rent?
Some climate controlled storage facilities charge additional fees for after hours deliveries and labor for loading and unloading trucks.

  • What happens if there's a power outage at a storage facility?
This is an important question that is sometimes taken for granted. Any large warehouse should have on site generators that are used as a backup power source. Understanding who incurs damages in the case of a sustained outage is a critical piece of the cold storage equation.

  • Are there any options for mobile cold storage?
Yes. Most facilities can provide customers with refrigerated cargo containers upon request.

  • What's a pallet exchange program?
Wooden pallets may seem disposable, but they are actually quite expensive. That's why most warehouses require customers to bring in as many pallets as they take out, or pay for the difference.

There are many professionals that work for cold storage warehouses. This can be an interesting and exciting line of work for the right individuals. In this business, you can expect to handle climate controlled containers, mobile storage units, backup generators, and even refrigerated rooms. While some perishable goods you store will need to be refrigerated, you will need to freeze other products. So you can expect to work in cool temperatures when you get involved with this line of work. Clients will often transport food products to the facility or warehouse you work at by truck.

There will likely be some initial training involved with this type of work. Depending on the setting or atmosphere you work in daily, you may have to carry a lot of insulated boxes and packaged foods. These items are often stored in a climate controlled container or room until they are later shipped to a grocery store or restaurant. It is important to pay close attention to the logistics for each shipment you handle, so that the goods are stored properly. Many of the professionals that rent cold storage containers and warehouse facility locations are supermarkets and retail food stores. Therefore you can expect to deal with workers from these businesses regularly. At times you will deal with refrigerated mobile trucks handling product pickups, and other times you will deal with major perishable food deliveries that must be stored properly.

With so much perishable food being distributed to stores daily, you can expect this type of work to get quite hectic at times.
