Seafood Restaurant Terminology
If you want to get the best out of your seafood dining experience, it is best to know a bit about each item on the menu. Consider this overview of common seafood restaurant ingredients to order the best meal for you and your dining companions.

Shellfish: This is a broad term for any type of seafood with an exoskeleton, or shell. There are three main types of shellfish you can order at a seafood restaurant or market.

Crustaceans: Crustaceans are shellfish that have a solid outer shell that is typically jointed. Some examples of crustaceans are the lobster, crabs, and shrimp.

Molluscs: A mollusc is a shellfish that has one or two hard shells, and some species shed these over the course of their life. Common molluscs are clams, scallops, mussels, and oysters.

Cephalopods: Believe it or not, marine life such as the squid and octopus are actually considered shellfish. They are known as cephalopods.

Salmon: Salmon is one of the more popular fish dishes in seafood establishments. Salmon have a pink, fleshy meat that is found naturally in the wild because of the food they eat. Farmed salmon is, in essence, dyed to create that same effect. It is generally accepted that wild salmon is better tasting, and therefore more expensive, than farmed salmon.

Surimi: Some restaurants and markets offer something called imitation crab meat, and other similarly named products. This type of imitations shellfish is made by surimi. Surimi is the flesh of other types of fish, such as pollack and whiting, which is then formed and dyed to match the appearance of crab or lobster.

If you are searching for a seafood restaurant to dine on your favorite clam chowder or fresh-caught fish, there are many restaurants situated in ideal locations that you can visit. All you have to do is find them! To begin, ask friends and neighbors for the local seafood bar and grill that they have visited recently to dine on some tasty calamari, crab and scallops. Then, you can also try checking the paper or the internet for restaurant reviews. Another way to find a secluded restaurant on the beach or at the local pier is just to drive down and start searching the water's edge. If you live on or near the ocean, there are usually many small restaurants up and down the cost that serve limited menus with specialized recipes for lobster, oyster, clams, and shrimp. One of these places is a great destination for a private, romantic date where you can enjoy fine dining. However, if searching for a more casual dinner, try searching the web for seafood restaurants in your area. Once you have generated a list with a few options, try checking out the restaurant's webpage. They will more often than not list information about their establishment like the menu, the fresh-caught fish of the day, specials, prices, and hours of operation. You can also find customer reviews for the restaurant, and even make reservations online for some of these places. But you should always feel free to call if you would like an opportunity to talk to someone on the phone. This way, you can get a bit of an idea what their customer service is like. If you think that their lobster buffet looks good, go and check it out. Worst comes to worst, you can try dining at a new restaurant next time!
