Questions to Ask About Your HMO

Medical expenses are made more manageable through the use of an insurance company or health maintenance organization. Unfortunately, medical and dental plans are complicated and each one is different. When meeting with your insurance or HMO representative, be sure to ask many questions so you are clear on what your new policy does and does not cover. The following questions are a few good ones to begin with.

  • What services are covered by my HMO or insurance plan?
This question is extremely important because different health maintenance organizations cover different services. All will cover basic doctor visits, but there can be limitations on dental or preventative care. These additional medical services may cost extra, too.

  • How much will I be required to spend on medical coverage?
Insurance policies and HMOs vary on how much their deductibles, copayments, and out-of-pocket expenses are. You will want to know beforehand how much you will be paying for medical and dental coverage each year, and you will want to be anticipating that ten dollar copayment after your next check-up.

  • Can I choose my own doctor?
Most health maintenance organizations require you to choose from a list of preselected physicians. This physician becomes you main doctor, or primary care provider. It will be up to your primary care provider to send you to see a specialist if and when it is necessary. Some open-ended HMOs will allow you to see a specialist or non-preselected physician for little or no cost to you. Always check with your HMO or insurance provider before visiting a new doctor or dentist.

Countless women and men work for health maintenance organizations. As you may know, these managed care organizations or HMOs work through doctors, hospitals, and other health care facilities to provide individuals medical insurance coverage. The plans available vary based on people’s preferences and the amount they wish to pay monthly for coverage. If you get involved with this growing industry and business, you will often deal with a number of standard HMO plans, as well as more exclusive health care coverage options. After all, this is a very large operation due to all of the individuals and families that require the coverage of a health maintenance organization.

There are plenty of opportunities for employment when you work with HMOs and health care insurance or medical coverage. However, you will likely need some training and expertise before you can get started in this field. After all, there are a number of family and individual medical coverage plans. You will have to discuss various rates with insurance agents. The rates will vary, depending on how many kids you have, whether or not you exercise or embrace physical fitness, or if there are any known diseases in your family. These issues all have an impact on each member’s personal monthly rate.

When working for a health maintenance organization, you will often have to inform people of what hospitals, medical facilities, specialty physicians, and local doctors accept their insurance coverage. You will also have to deal with clinics, doctors, and hospitals on a regular basis.
