Important Terms to Know About Guns Accessories and Gunsmiths
Gunsmiths sell guns to hunters, hobbyists, members of law enforcement, residential homeowners and business owners. Many people choose to own and operate guns and related weapons for the purposes of protection, hunting and public defense. All states require a license to operate a firearm. Consider these important terms about guns and accessories when dealing with a gunsmith.

Gun Scopes: Typically used with rifles, these accessories make a real difference in long-range shooting and accuracy. The type you choose depends on the type of shooting you plan on doing, whether target shooting or dear hunting. These scopes utilize telescopic lenses so you can more accurately see what you’re shooting at from very far off.

Mount: A component needed to secure a weapon in place. There are two different types: static mounts and non-static mounts.

Revolver: A repeating firearm with many chambers and one barrel for firing.

Ballistics: The study of mechanics in regards to the flight, behavior and effect of anything from bullets to rockets. It involves the science of projectiles in regards to their design and acceleration.

Metallurgy: The study of metal within materials science that focuses on the behavior of metallic elements and alloys. It involves the science of metal technology and how science is applied to the use of metals.

Caliber: The internal diameter of a gun’s barrel as it relates to the diameter of the projectile used inside it.

Express Rifle: A term used to indicate a rifle or ammunition capable of higher than usual velocities. This term first emerged in the mid-19th century.

Gunsmiths are the professionals who sell guns and accessories. They must have extensive knowledge of all types of guns, such as rifles, pistols, and revolvers, along with detailed expertise on gun cleaning and repair. They should also be current on government laws and regulations regarding gun control, and what they mean for the average consumer. Knowledge of calibers, ballistics, scopes, mounts, and metallurgy are all pluses.

Gunsmiths should be trustworthy and only accept business from those with valid firearms licenses. They should have an appreciation for all types of weaponry, and being well balanced with great eyesight are also good qualities to have. Many gunsmiths have formal education under their belts, either through an apprenticeship, attendance at an accredited gunsmith school, or both. Being a gunsmith can be an exciting and lucrative career with the proper dedication and know-how. Good business sense and communication skills are needed in this industry as well.

Dealers who sell guns and accessories in a store often have locked display cases and cabinets showcasing the latest in ammo, stocks, magazines, and holsters. They may also sell related items that require a firearms license to buy, such as knives, pepper spray, and other chemicals.

Some gunsmiths also operate shooting ranges where the general public (with licenses of course), hunters, and police officials can practice their shooting skills. They may offer training courses, safety gear, and books to help further educate customers. Some gunsmiths have online sites that showcase products such as bags, stocks, parts, scopes, and mounts. Some contract with large governmental entities to supply the necessary firearms and supplies for officers.

Most gunsmiths will clean, repair, and provide replacement parts for your gun. From pads and blanks to shells and scopes, gunsmiths provide many services and products for licensed customers.
