Helpful Government Contractor Terms
When dealing with government contractors, here are some helpful terms and definitions to keep in mind:

Teaming Agreement: This is a formula document that is used between two or more contracting companies. This document describes the details and specifics of the partnership.

FSC: These are federal supply codes. These codes are used by government agencies in order to categorize different products.

Contracting Officer: The officer or individual that is in charge of issuing, managing, and funding the contract. The contacting officer varies depending on the product or service that is needed.

Audit Agency: This is an agency that is responsible for enforcing all regulations that apply to a contract, in addition to auditing the contract. The primary audit agency used by the federal government is the DCAA, which is the Defense Contracting Audit Agency.

Cost Plus Award Fee: Also referred to as CPAF, this is essentially a contract that involves the contractor being paid for all necessary expenses, in addition to another sum of money that is paid specifically for profit reasons.

RFP: This is a request for proposal. This type of request is put out when a contract is up for bidding. The contacting officer puts out the RFP, and its requirements are used to create their proposal, as well as demonstrate their capabilities.

Bid and Proposal: Also known as a B&P, this is submitted when a contract has been listed. Each government contractor with interest and the right skills or experience can submit a bid and proposal. This allows each contractor to prove that they have what is required to complete the task of the contract.

If you are a small business owner who is looking to expand, increase profit, and make others in the industry more aware of your existence, consider become a government contractor. The federal government will often offer contracts to independent businesses for specific projects in order to support private companies, as well as stimulate the market and save some money. For instance, the United States might need a certain censes conducted to evaluate the current state of residents. In this case, they might employ an independent research company to complete the job, and then provide them with the results. Other types of government contracts might be construction, weapon manufacturing for the sake of homeland security, or the manufacturing of specified products. In order to procure a federal contract, different businesses will bid on a job, and the one that places the lowest bid is usually the company that will win the job. To find out more about research grants, possible revenue, and current projects that the government is looking to employ private businesses for, try looking online. You should be able to find relevant information. If this fails, try contacting the administrative branch heading up the project you are interested in managing. It might be especially profitable for contractors to look into working on U.S. buildings, since the government is always running some sort of construction project. Just be sure to do your research before entering into the field, so that you are well prepared to complete a job if you procure the contract and end up being employed by the federal government. Remember, we will be counting on you to produce the goods!
