Tips for Garages
Many houses have garages that house vehicles and other items. Whether it's a simple one-stall design or a more complex three-stall design with loft above, garages come in all shapes and sizes. You can construct a garage yourself or hire someone to create it or install a garage door opener. Contractors skilled in garage building bring expertise to this task, which involves knowledge of many components, such as drywall, drainage, siding and more. Check out these tips to keep your garage or carport organized and neat:

Tip #1: Put in racks
Construct or buy a wall rack system to hang anything from bicycles to tools. You can use a simple Peg-Board design with hooks for hanging small items, or you can install shelving which can house paint cans, sports gear, car washing supplies and more. Cabinets are another ideal way to clear space and organize belongings that are essential to the successful operation of your garage.

Tip #2: Add decoration
To add a decorative touch to your garage, you can include a cupola or molding that really makes your garage one of a kind. To add a cupola yourself, measure the roof pitch, install the cupola (which you can make from a template) and secure it to the roof.

Tip #3: Make your garage a safe space
Many people store things in their garage in a haphazard way that can be dangerous to occupants. People also store things in the garage that shouldn’t be in there at all, such as gas grills and propane tanks. Keep propane at least 10 feet away from the house, because if it leaks, it only needs a spark to ignite. Don’t forget to change the batteries in the garage smoke alarm twice a year, just as you do within the house. Store chemicals such as pesticides, paints, and auto fluids in their original containers and on a high shelf or locked cabinet, out of the reach of children and pets.

What you may not know is that a garage is not just a place to store your tools, your car and your equipment. A garage must be built to very rigid specifications. If you are building a garage on your property or you are buying a new home with a garage, you should ask a few of these questions to better understand this vital space of a house?

  • How big is the garage?
If you are buying a house, the listed square footage does not include the garage, and so you need to know the exact size of a garage. Some have a garage door that is only big enough for two cars, but has space deep enough for three. "Two Car Garage" can mean the door or the square footage, so ask this to know the "true" size.

  • Is the garage door made of metal, steel or siding?
If all you want is the door, the material from which it's made greatly impacts the overall cost. Some steel and metal doors are one piece, where those made out of siding material come in a sectional kit.

  • What comes with the garage door?
Many garage doors are sold complete, meaning they have a door, motor with opener and remote, and all the hardware for installation. Be careful not to buy a motor separately from a door or opener that does not match.

  • What security is necessary for a garage door?
Ask this because you'll want to know who will have access to your remote's wireless code. If you keep your car in the garage, a thief can gain access to the remote's frequency and open the door without much trouble. Understand how to protect what you keep in the garage.
