Questions to Ask at a Fabric Shop

If you are shopping for linens, cloth, and quilting supplies for your first sewing project, than you may have a lot of questions. Don't be afraid to ask questions to the staff at the fabric store, they are there to help. If you have a lot of questions about sewing, you are better off shopping at a local fabric shop than online.

  • What are the different types of sewing machine needles?
There are over 10 different types of needles that can be used for quilting, stitching, crocheting and other needle and thread project.

  • What is the best kind of thread to use?
The answer to this question depends on what you are designing. Cotton thread works well for quilt making. Wool nylon is great for making different styles of bathing suits.

  • I am new to sewing and upholstering can I work with silk?
Silk is a medium skill material to work with. New upholsterers and sewers are best off starting with cotton or polyester. Organza and silk are often the hardest fabrics to use for making fashionable clothes.

  • Any tips for making a blanket?
Making a blanket out of fleece or flannel can be a good idea due to their warm nature. You may also want to make the blanket in a fun pattern that the receiver of the blanket will enjoy. A teenage girl may like a zebra pattern blanket while a young boy may enjoy the notion of a football print blanket. Damask fabrics can also be enjoyable since they are reversible.

  • Where can I find some cheap yards of fabric?
Some stores may have a clearance section. You may also want to try a second hand shop. You can make some unique dresses and drapes out of vintage fabric.

Sewing can be a fun pastime for people of all ages. Getting the right fabrics, notions, and patterns to complete your project is made easy these days with online shops. Such fabric shops offer a variety of fabrics and accessories, from flannel and cotton to wool and linen. Specify how many yards you need of each kind, along with color, and type of design, such as vintage sewing prints. Please the order in your shopping cart, check out securely, and set up delivery. You can even track your quilted fleece order from start to finish.

Wholesalers are a big part of the fabric business, as they offer cheap bulk discounts for retailers, seamstresses, and tailors who need lots of material such as upholstery materials at once. Volume pricing means that you can buy more for your money when you buy large quantities. Retail stores, another component of the fabric industry, offer regular sales and discounts, too, but on a smaller scale.

Sales associates, many of whom are seamstresses and tailors on the side, can assist customers with measuring and cutting the amounts of silk cloth, damask, and cotton they need. They can point out modern apparel patterns and designs, help the customers pick out accessories and supplies, and provide check-out services.

Associates can work with each customer as she searches the store for what she needs, along with the desired fashion and style, such as vintage or modern drapes. You’ll often find these consulting services within small specialty fabric shops that specialize in certain areas, such as materials for quilts and upholstery, or patterns for dresses.
