  • What kind of experience does the contractor have?
    If you want someone to build you a pergola, select a contractor who has built pergolas before, not someone who specializes in creating pool decks, and vice versa. Most contractors will have pictures of previous projects available either online or in the office. While you can save money by going with less experienced contractors, try to make sure they at least have a working knowledge of decks and patios. If the overall design you want is complicated, like a gazebo overlooking a pond you had installed, it is best to pay more money in the beginning than deal with inept work.

  • What does the contractor specialize in?
    Some contractors construct eco-friendly decks and patios made from composite wood with little impact on the environment. Others have their own architects who can build stunning custom designs. Research perspective contractors to see what they have to offer.

  • Does a contractor need a license?
    The contractor you use should be licensed and insured. If not, use another contractor.
