Tips on Taking Dance Classes
Use these following tips to help you in your search for local dance classes and groups:

Tip #1: Look into the school and the instructor's background.
If you're going to be taking dance classes, then you want to learn from the most qualified instructor there is. It's a good idea to take a tour of the school, or take a test run of the lessons to get a feel for how the classes work. Also, you should be able to verify the dancing background of your instructor. For example, it makes little sense for a classically trained ballet instructor to teach modern jazz, and vice versa.

Tip #2: Find a school that lets parents observe children's classes.
Kids love to learn how to dance and will relish going to their dance classes. However, as a parent you want to make sure your child is always safe and comfortable during their dance instruction. Most dance instructors and schools know this and have chairs in the room, or a large observation window outside that lets parents watch their children. If your dance school doesn't, you should find another one.

Tip #3: You're never too old to learn to dance.
Dancing is an excellent way to get your daily exercise. Maybe at 40 you'll never be a prima donna ballerina, but you can still learn the steps and have fun doing it. Both jazz and tap are faster than ballet and burn more calories while teaching intricate steps. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something that's a little bit different.

Dance instruction, especially in ballet, tap and jazz, combine to form a very popular industry. Dance schools are one of the main establishments that offer educational classes to kids, teens and adults. They bring ballet to the public.

When you first enter the dance studio, one of the first people that you encounter is the receptionist. This person is extremely important. The receptionist should be able to tell you all of the classes that are available at the academy, as well as the styles of dance that are offered. For instance, the receptionist should know when children's group lessons are taking place, and whether or not the studio offers modern dance, tap or jazz. This person should also set you up with an appointment with one of the instructors to find out more about the class.

The dance teacher will probably be the next person you meet, and is one of the most important people at the school. Depending on the type of class you are looking to enroll in, the instructor may be able to offer different lessons, where you can learn the steps most effectively, and at the right pace. Many dance instructors have spent a number of years forming their own education in Pointe ballet, tap and jazz. Not only have the spent years as the students, performing routines for other instructors, but many also have attended dance academies for some form of formal education to become an instructor. When you express interest in joining their class, they may test you to see if you are a beginner or advanced student, and assess you experience in dancing. They should be able to place you in the right level. Some dance halls even branch off into choreography for events like musicals and videos for students.
