Questions for Air Conditioning Contractors

Air conditioning units and HVAC systems are an important aspect of everyday life, especially since they control the heat and cool air in residential homes and commercial buildings. At some point or another, you may need to hire an HVAC contractor to install or repair an AC compressor or heat pump. It is very important to make inquiries before hiring anyone. A few helpful questions are listed below.

  • Can you install a split level HVAC system?
Many people want separate thermostats to regulate different temperatures on different floors. It is important to make certain the air conditioning and heating contractor can handle this type of project before hiring him or her.

  • Can you repair a mobile AC unit or window cooling system?
As plenty of people use small, portable AC units in home and office windows, many air conditioning contractors are used to dealing with these. However, it is best to ask up front.

  • Can you convert my home so that it has central air?
This is certainly a major task. It involves installing an HVAC system to fit the size of the home as well as installing all of the necessary ductwork and vents for each room. Some contractors may not be able to do this.

  • Can you install a new compressor in my HVAC system or air conditioning unit? This is also something you will need to discuss with the contractor up front. He or she will likely need to know what size the system is before anything can be installed.

  • Can you repair/install a furnace?
Many people use furnaces to heat air and water. However, not all HVAC experts will be equipped to repair or install a furnace or heat pump unit.

"They took care of me in the heat of summer. The AC broke. We decided to replace heat also since it was so old. It took a lot of work for them to remove the old furnace. They did a great job. When the cold weather came, the heat needed minor adjustments. They came back and fixed things for no extra charge. I would use them again if I needed work done. ..."

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems are essential to keeping the temperature inside your residential home or commercial building comfortably cool or warm. To install, repair and maintain these machines, you need the help of a professional air conditioning contractor or technician.

Air conditioning contractors are trained to work with furnaces, AC units, and heating systems. However, this is not a skill they acquire overnight. After high school, certified AC contractors must attend trade school. Here, they learn brand specific technologies, how to install a window compressor, split HVAC units, and even how to replace the pumps in these different machines. After finishing their trade school program, technicians must then look for an apprenticeship with an experienced trade-person. In the apprenticeship, technicians learn how to apply the skills they learned in school in a practical way. Depending on the type of master contractor they are working with, they can learn everything from working with a complex refrigeration system found in transport trucks or restaurants, to making minor repairs to a portable air conditioning unit.

When the apprenticeship is done, the HVAC technician is ready to move on to working full time for another company. However, this person is still not certified. After gaining enough experience, the technician may take an EPA licensing test, showing he or she knows how to work with central HVAC systems, mobile air conditioning units, heating furnaces, and more. Finally, after all of this, a technician can move on to take on his or her own apprentices, supervised a HVAC team, or even just continue working at his or her previous job.
