Tips on Vacuum Cleaner Repair
The following tips can help you decide if you need to use a professional vacuum cleaner service to repair your vacuum:

Tip #1: Double check your vacuum.
Vacuum cleaners can start malfunctioning for several reasons. However, before taking your vacuum cleaner to a repair service, make sure the problem is with the actual machine. Many vacuums don't perform as well as they did before because they may need their bags changed, or their bristles cleaned. On cyclonic vacuums that don't have a bag, make sure the dirt container is properly emptied. Oftentimes, vacuums that aren't emptied when they should be have less sucking power.

Tip #2: Check to see if your vacuum cleaner has a warranty.
Almost every high-end vacuum cleaner comes with a warranty. When buying your vacuum, make sure you store this warranty policy in a safe place for occasions just like this. If your vacuum stops working while under warranty, then you won't have to pay to fix it. Make sure you let the repair shop know that this vacuum has a warranty, as some manufacturers only allow certain repair shops to fix their vacuums.

Tip #3: Only repair the vacuum if it costs less than buying a new one.
Many high end vacuum cleaners can cost over a thousand dollars. Repairing these expensive vacuums is an excellent alternative to buying a new one. If you have a cheap vacuum, like a small handheld unit; however, it will likely cost you as much to repair it as to buy a new one. Check into current vacuum prices before deciding to spend your money repairing your vacuum cleaner.

One of the original parts on the first vacuum cleaner was an enormous bellows, which meant that repairs were not cheap and it wasn’t really that portable. Modern vacuum cleaners clean everything from carpet to countertops, so it is a good idea to ask a few questions to avoid costly repairs.

  • How often should I change the filter?
The filter keeps small particles of dirt out of the vacuum, which could cause long term damage. However, you don’t need to change the filter as often as the bag. On a residential model, you should change the filter after the sixth bag replacement or so.

  • What kind belt is best suited for my vacuuming needs?
The belt is important because it runs the engine. There are two types of belts. Geared belts have teeth and are used on higher quality machines, such as commercial and industrial models. They last longer and make for easier maintenance. Flat belts are made to wear out and are labor intensive because they tend to break more often.

  • What happens if the brushes don’t spin on my steam machine?
If the brushes don’t spin correctly, the floor won’t be as clean. Brushes are the matchmaking part of the vacuum. They introduce the dirt to the inside of the machine and turn by the airflow from the vacuum’s suction. If they don’t spin, try to manually spin them. If they don’t spin, the brush may be clogged but this is easy to fix. A good idea is to clean the brushes after every use.

  • How can I avoid having to repair my cordless vacuum?
Proper use of a cordless vacuum can eliminate costly repairs or replacement. Despite being more portable than their tethered brethren, cordless models are a little more sensitive. Don’t use a cordless vacuum outdoors and keep the opening free of debris.
