Questions to Ask a Self-Service Storage Company

Whether you are moving, cleaning out a garage, or simply need more space, you may need to hire a storage company. Once you assess your items, be prepared to ask the facility manager about your self-storage needs. Always shop around before making a decision, whether you are only storing a few pieces of old furniture or looking for a place to keep a new car.

  • What are your rental terms?
Always ask what the price is based on the size of a unit and the space available. The space is only to rent and is not a garage, so you must plan your storage carefully. Find out how much you will be paying per month for the smallest space you need. If you have a boat or an RV, you will need a much larger area, whereas household items may only require a mini-container. Request late fee prices and how long before the manager auctions off a lien.

  • What do the facilities feature?
First, assess your own items. Of particular importance is climate control. If your items are generally kept in your home, portable units and containers may be appropriate. However, if your items are more valuable, you may need a facility that regulates humidity and temperature. Security is also important in your personal unit, so ensure the doors are secure.

  • How far is the facility from my home?
Self-storage is only useful if it is accessible. Ask if there are multiple locations and choose one near you.

  • Is a loading dock available?
If you have large items, you may find that a loading dock is necessary to ensure ease of loading and unloading.

Self storage facilities generally hire a relatively small number of employees. It is normal for them to have a watchman or security guard on duty at all times.

Those offering portable storage also hire drivers, although some containers may be towed by the client with their own car. In some cases the same company may also offer moving services, usually door to door, either self drive or with drivers.

In most cases, the personal property in the containers or garages is kept at the owner's risk, although the facility may face liability if negligence, such as malfunctioning doors or lost keys, is proved. Some storage facilities may be highly specialized. For example, some might specifically offer winter storage for RVs or boats. Mini storage facilities generally just hold small items of furniture or valuables.

Facilities generally rent units on a monthly basis. Price is usually determined by unit size and available space. Moving services may be charged by the hour. Thus, storage facilities handle a fair amount of money. They require bookkeepers and secretarial staff who handle the financial side of the business. In some cases, a storage company may find themselves holding all of the worldly goods of a temporarily homeless person. In many, however, storage is simply used for items that will not fit in the limited space of a smaller home or apartment. If a client defaults, storage companies need to retrieve the rent they are owed. They may, thus, have to work with collection companies. Depending on the law, they may be in a situation of selling goods to recoup unpaid rent.

Self storage facilities are fairly numerous and likely to remain so into the future.
