Organization Terminology
Organizations have numerous goals, structures and motives. They can be professional fellowships that serve to provide standards to which businesses must adhere, or charitable associations that provide help for people, animals or natural phenomena that are unable to survive without assistance. If you are curious about different types of organizations, then the following terms might help you understand the different purposes of organizations:

Nonprofit Organizations: Nonprofit organizations are businesses or corporations that exist solely to earn money for the purpose of supporting a type of charitable cause without earning a profit for owners or shareholders. Nonprofit organizations can serve a wide spectrum of causes, but often serve the community by providing health care, education, environmental resources and support for disenfranchised groups.

Advocacy Groups: Advocacy groups are political lobbyists that use their influence to affect public policy and legislation. Advocacy groups are often labor unions, consumer groups, faith based organizations, professional organizations and social organizations. While some advocacy groups have been scrutinized for working solely for commercial gain, many groups provide support and recognition for issues that would otherwise be overlooked.

Regulatory Bodies: Regulatory bodies are governing agencies that provide industry standards under which many professionals must operate. These organizations provide certification, outline policies and procedures and establish ethical guidelines.

Social Organizations: Social organizations are voluntary associations that provide support for groups that feel underrepresented by their communities or governmental legislation. Social organizations might serve groups of a particular ethnic background, economic level, religion or sexual orientation. Social organizations are often also nonprofit organizations.

Find out if you have to pay membership dues in order to volunteer. The charity might give you the opportunity to volunteer without making a donation, but they often want financial contributions from everyone to help them offer their services to the community. You will also want to make sure that they support your perspective so that you agree with their stance on important issues. This will make you feel good about the work that you do for the club, nonprofit, children's rescue mission, charity, or similar volunteer organization.
