Facial and Skin Care Spas – Questions to Ask

A few hours in a beauty salon or day spa can rejuvenate the body and the spirit. Many of these salons specialize in facial treatments to improve the health and appearance of the skin. Basic care might involve products to cleanse, moisturize, exfoliate and open skin pores. Advanced skin treatment can involve such procedures as herbal body wraps, chemical peels and dermabrasion. Here are some questions to ask a beauty salon or day spa about their products and services.

  • What types of treatments do you provide?
Facial treatments are just the beginning at some salons and days spas. Many also provide massages, manicures and pedicures, hair styling and other beauty treatments.

  • What are the risks of this treatment?
Certain procedures such as chemical peels may damage some types of skin. Ask questions about any risk factors to a treatment and explore alternatives.

  • Do you provide treatments for men as well?
While many massages and body wraps are equally beneficial for men and women, some salons also feature products and procedures created for a male skin care regimen.

  • Do you have a medical staff?
Some facial treatments may require a dermatologist, esthetician or licensed health care expert.

  • What products do you recommend?
Facial and skin care is a daily obligation. A spa or salon can help to eliminate dead skin cells and other blemishes, and can also provide advice on the best products to help you maintain a healthy look.

  • What are your hours?
Some spas may stay open late to accommodate customers who wish to visit after work.
  • Allied Health Association
Our association provides resources for any facial and skin care spa or salon. Join our alliance for health to promote your business and let customers know you are dedicated to their overall health.

When men and women visit a spa or salon for facials and skin care, they often encounter a varied set of professionals. The first professional one may deal with is the front desk receptionist or hostess. This person greets customers, outlines costs, books appointments, answers the phone, and advises customers on the best procedures for them.

Many salons feature a chart or price booklet outlining the costs for anything from massages and facials to acne peels and waxing. Another professional one may encounter is a massage therapist. He or she should have specific training and schooling in massage therapy, and possess a current license.

Day spa technicians can give customers rejuvenating body wraps, or exfoliate skin through peels and microdermabrasion. Specific skills include training in the above practices, a warm bedside manner, and excellent people skills. Other professionals specialize in manicures and pedicures. These providers, like the ones above, should preferably have some type of beauty school experience. Other technicians can help exfoliate and clear skin, provide esthetics treatments, offer hair and skin moisture rejuvenation, and pore cleanses for fresh skin.

Costs vary by salon, so customers should do their research before committing. They should be on the lookout for a clean and sanitary workplace, headed by qualified personnel with plenty of experience in the facial health and skin care business.

Health and wellness is at the forefront of any good spa or salon. From nail and skin care to facials and beauty regimens, spas and salons operating within this industry should be able to provide a wide range of services for their valued clients.
