Dry cleaning questions

It's such a terrible feeling to wash a load of laundry at home only to discover that stain is still there, or worse yet, one of your clothes has bled all over your others and now your white shirt is an off-pink. Dry cleaning is an alternative to cleaning your clothes at home, and sometimes, depending on the fabric, it is your only choice for cleaning clothes.

  • What is dry cleaning>
Dry cleaners use professional machines to clean laundry. Instead of using water, they use a solvent, as some fabrics such as leather and suede cannot be washed in water. This is where they get the name “dry” cleaners, as water is not used.

  • How do I know if my clothes need to be dry cleaned?
Read the tags, as they will state if the garment needs to be dry cleaned or not. Remember when buying clothes that using dry cleaners is an extra expense that the penny-saving shopper should be aware of.

  • What do they do at the dry cleaners?
Besides cleaning clothes and removing stains, some dry cleaners employ tailors and can perform alterations to clothes. Alterations are important if you want your clothes to fit, especially for big occasions like weddings. Most customers also like the convenience of having a tailor and a laundry cleaning service in the same store. Also, there are different levels of service. Some dry cleaners offer same day services at no charge, while others charge extra. Some will even deliver your clothes. Finally, another trend in dry cleaning today is to be more eco-friendly, as the solvents used for dry cleaning tend to be made up of harmful and toxic chemicals. New machines are being developed that use carbon dioxide instead and these cleaners are marketing themselves as “green” or environmentally friendly.

"I've used SCDC for about 2 years now. The quality has gone down over the last couple of months, & the prices have gone up. We've had items returned with stains that weren't there to begin with, & most recently, this week, they lost 2 very expensive suit coats. How they lost the suit coats and not the pants is beyond me! Second of all, when they bagged the items and tagged them with the tickets, ..."

"I had them replace a zipper on a formal, long, black skirt. Instead of replacing it with a matching dress type zipper, they put an industrial type brass zipper in that looked to be an inch wide! you could see it from a mile away! They charged me an astronomical amount and acted as though I was unreasonable! Rude and unprofessional! I won't be back! ..."

The dry cleaning industry will be around for as long as folks need special laundry done that they can't do at home. If you decide to work in this industry or own a facility, you may enjoy a certain level of job security.

Owning a dry cleaner's requires business and customer service savvy to run properly. You'll have to know local and federal tax laws along with how to manage employees. Buying the proper machinery will be important to your business, including a sewing machine if you intend on offering tailoring and altering services. You can attend training seminars on the laundry cleaning process, stain removal, finishing procedures, and work flow. You'll need to be familiar with different types of fabrics (i.e. suede, leather, silk, etc.) and how to remove stains from them. If you don't have any clothing altering experience, it may be wise to get training before opening your shop. When a woman brings in her wedding gown to be changed, she'll expect quality work. You'll also need the training experience in order to train your employees.

Buying the proper solutions for your equipment is important. The most popular chemical to use is tetrachloroethylene, known as perc, though it is considered hazardous to the environment and was labeled as a toxic carcinogen at one point. Newer, greener, safer materials are on the market today that produce the same results when it comes to apparel care. You can also advise customers on which solutions are commercially available and can be used for home carpet cleaning.

It's up to you whether you allow for delivery services and same day pick-up. Cheaper rates may gain more customers, but charge too little and your business will not thrive.
