The process of making funeral arrangements can seem daunting when you're experiencing grief from the death of a loved one. If the deceased's final wishes include cremation, you'll need to find a reputable crematorium to handle the body. Keep these questions in mind to help simplify the process and allow you to focus on paying your respects.

  • Doe you offer space for memorial services?
    Some facilities have special rooms where you can hold a viewing or funeral on the premises. If the crematorium does not offer this type of service, inquire if there is a nearby mortuary that can accommodate memorials.

  • Can a representative of the family observe the cremation?
    Be cautious of facilities that do not allow witnesses. A reputable service should allow someone to watch the process to ensure that the ashes received are really those of the deceased.

  • Are your workers or your facility certified?
    Several organizations provide certification for crematory workers and facilities, including the Cremation Association of North America and the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association. Certification attests to the skills and professionalism of a facility and its employees.

  • What options do you have available for the body and the remains?
    If the crematorium allows on site memorial services, the facility may sell caskets for viewings. Most crematoriums also have a selection of urns available for the ashes in many price ranges. Some may even sell space in a cemetery for you to store the urn.

  • How do you handle the return of jewelry?
    Crematoriums should have a policy on how they store and return valuables.

  • What do you do with prosthetic items?
    If your loved one had a prosthetic limb or another item that cannot be cremated, the crematorium may require these items to be removed prior to the process. Otherwise, they should have a policy to arrange for their disposal or return.
