Business Profile
Associations

The full time staff of associations are generally volunteers. They work in management and administration areas for different associations, like homeowner associations. Most management associations have a board of directors. Trade and professional associations, as well as alumni associations, commonly employ a number of administrative assistants.

One of the most common positions offered within an association is that of the membership administrator. The membership administrator handles the membership database. Other employees deal with the association's online presence and provide specific information and resources. In the case of professional associations, it is common for an employee to have to deal with group medical insurance.

National associations commonly have their headquarters in or near where they can lobby on behalf of their membership. Some trade associations and unions have offices in a center of the industry or business concerned.

Homeowner associations are always local, associated with a specific development. Their staff tend to work on a volunteer basis. Membership within these associations is generally not voluntary, but is spelled out in the property deed. Their staff has to explain restrictions to new residents. They also are in charge of collecting dues.

An alumni association or society is generally headquartered on the campus of the specific university or college it is associated with.

Almost all organizations print newsletters, and therefore have openings for writers and editors, although these functions may be combined with administrative work. As associations are sometimes non profit organizations, they have to handle non profit paperwork.

Associations generally, but not always, exist for the overall benefit of their members. Associations provide leverage to a large group when dealing with outsiders. They may also focus on networking and helping people to stay in contact with others who have common interests.

Some associations look out for their workers' compensation. Some associations can help you prepare for planning new business ventures by offering feasibility studies or training needs assessments. Whatever your business or personal need, you can find directory listings of thousands of associations. Such directory sites provide detailed information on business and trade associations, as well as professional societies, charities, community associations, and non-profit organizations. For a fee, you can search databases, browse sample listings, and get access to information such as association names, contact names, phone numbers, membership stats, size, descriptions of services, publications, and schedules of meetings and seminars. You can even download your search results into any software. Keep in mind that associations can provide interim guidelines, surveys, membership benefits, management services, environmental assessment studies, focus group activities, online surveys, benchmarking studies, governance analysis, strategic planning, board training, and government compensation. Whatever your need, whether interim management associations, business resources center association, interim surveys, or membership perks, there is an association out there for you. Go online to research how various associations can help you conduct focus groups, perform analyses and strategic planning, find project assistance and other valuable resources, hold informational center retreats, find consultants in your area of expertise, find business center associations in your area, get information resources for good governance practices, and learn frameworks for leadership and management techniques for your firm. Contact a few different ones that can meet your needs and get more information, such as membership dues, benefits, meetings, location, mission and volunteer work. When considering how to choose an association to join, be sure the fees, mission and resources gel with your vision, ensuring the association you ultimately choose fits best with your goals and outlooks.
