Terms for Branches of Urology
In order to maintain the health and well being of the urinary system, it is important that one periodically visits a urologist. Urologists are doctors who diagnose, treat and manage urinary tract disorders, and specialize in the reproductive system in males. If you have an infection or disorder of the urinary tract system, then it is advisable to make an appointment with a urologist as soon as practicable. It is helpful to be able to distinguish the many branches of urology if you seek assistance. Here is a list of terms for the various branches of urology, as well as basic procedures:

Vasectomy: A medical procedure for permanent male sterilization. The vasa deferentia are severed and tied in such a way as to prevent sperm from entering the ejaculate stream. Vasectomies are minimally invasive, and typically completed in under an hour.

Endourology: The urological branch that involves the minimally invasive inspection and manipulation of the urinary tract.

Laparoscopy: The robot-assisted surgical procedure that is typically performed in the abdomen or pelvis.

Urolic Oncology: Surgical treatment of malignant disorders of the prostate, bladder, kidneys, penis and testicles.

Neurourology: A branch of medicine concerning neurological reasons for the disruption of normal urination, such as incontinence or urinary retention. Those neurological reasons might include stroke, Parkinson's disease or Multiple Sclerosis.

Andrology: The branch of urology that focuses on the male reproductive system and sexual function.

Urogynecology: The branch of gynecology that focuses on the condition of the bladder and urinary tract; notably overactive bladder, incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.

An appointment with a urologist can be an intimidating experience. Many of the conditions treated by a urology doctor can be a source of discomfort or embarrassment for the patient. Sensitivity and discretion are important elements of patient care. Asking these questions may help to put you at ease during the visit.

  • What should I bring for the appointment?
Before a urologist can treat any condition, he or she will require a list of medications and supplements you are already taking. If your primary doctor has already prescribed tests or x-rays, bring any information related to those as well. Proof of insurance may also be necessary.

  • What treatment options are available?
There may be more than one way to treat a condition that affects the bladder, prostate or kidneys. Before considering surgery, ask if your condition can be treated through medication or therapy.

  • Will I require in-patient or outpatient care?
Some procedures, such as a vasectomy, may be performed either in a hospital or in an outpatient clinic.

  • Are you board certified?
Ask if the doctor has earned certification from the American Board of Urology.

  • How many of these procedures have you performed?
Whether it is a vasectomy, a vasectomy reversal, kidney stones or a bladder infection, ask the doctor about their past experience with the procedure required to treat your condition.

  • Do you perform robotic surgery?
Robotic-assisted procedures are one way to treat several conditions that will necessitate a visit to a urology doctor. However, not every urologist is qualified to perform these treatments.

  • What type of recovery time should I expect?
Find out how long it will take before you can resume a normal lifestyle, or return to work, following a urology procedure.
